Through The Loneley Nights

What do you guys think of this song? I think it's AMAZING!

Along with Let It Rock, it's the only decent song on that dreadful 'Rarities' compilation.

I'd have loved the Stones to have performed it live.

It's good and I like it...but I think they made the right decision leaving it off IORR or GHS because one more slow one would have killed both those records.

What I want to hear them redo NO SPARE PARTS.

You're right-it was the only reason to buy the cd. Rarities my butt!!

I still won't admit buying Rarities. But the reason I did it was because of Through The Lonely Nights and Let It Rock; so I wouldn't wear out my vinyls completely.
They should have kept it to a 3" cd single....Let It Rock/Through The Lonely Nights, with a picture of the band from 71 on the front, and from 74 on the back..Taylor and Wyman included

Didn't they played it live once on the Licks tour? I thought someone said that

It has been rehearsed a few times but never been played live.

I had an old book called Rolling Stones AtoZ and it claimed the solo in Through The Lonely Nights is Jimmy Page. Is this true?

It sure sounds like him comparatively to the Zepp songs of the time, but its not a solo Mick Taylor couldn't have played.

I've heard it's Jimmy Page too

I agree,Erik. Actually a friend gave it to me cause I refused to buy it-he laughed at me about it. I bought the 45 brand new in 74 and "Nights" sounded like a worn out record the first time I played it. Did you have that experience? I just thought it must have been a bad pressing but I heard others comment to the same effect.

Now that you mention it, it does sound muddy on the vinyl. I have the french 7" with the pic from the Till The Next Goodbye video
Hmmm...the sound of most instruments sound 'worn out', but if memory serves - there's a couple of things there that shines through; Taylors solo and Charlie's hi-hat... or am I incorrect? Need to play it again, but it sure is a wierd mix on that one.

Have in on 7". Refuse to buy rarities if only for the cover (photoshopping Wyman out of it)

Great track. Like the bridge, the backing vocals and the MT solo gives me goosebumps.

Cool song, shoulda been included on IORR instead of some of the lesser tracks.

I was parted for ages from my copy of the IORR single with TTLN on the B side.
Really missed it. Picked up another copy years later and frequently pull it out to play this flip side.

ERIK- yeah I can still hear MT and Charlie ok but I guess a more accurate way of describing it would be parts of the 45 sounded kinda like a worn acetate. My copy came from a first pressing I assume since I used to hound the record store employees for a heads up on Stones releases and usually got the first one off the rack!

That's what I did too. Still got most of them thankfully.

If they would have included this and Criss Cross Man instead of, I dunno, Hide Your Love and Can You Hear The Music (that would have, or could have, fit IORR better maybe?) then I think Goats Head Soup would have been possibly, with exception to Exile, their COOLEST 1970s album.

It's a shame it wasn't included on GHS personally. Beautiful song. The MT solo is excellent, absolutely brilliant. I bought Rarities just for this track, Let It Rock and I Just Want To Make Love To You (somehow I missed that CD single, what, High Wire? Pissed me off so bad...).

i like it, yes i do!..in fact i love it!!! ha...I got Rarities mostly because of this song...i have not heard it since 1986 when i got rid of my turn table...and i have really missed hearing it!!!

Mick Taylor is just great on this track!---play it loud.....

I always liked Hide Your Love but maybe CrissCross wouldve been a stronger track. Totally agree that "Music" seemed like filler.

Another thumbs up for this track. It's an absolute peach and sits nicely alongside all the other nice, lazy ballads of the early-mid 70s.

Once again The Stones do country music better than the "hats" in Nashville

It´s a nice, nice, nice song. It´s just in the goat´s head soup mood. Nice chorus, nice flavour, beatiful song. Yes indeed.

I'm almost positive Page is on that somewhere. I know I've read that several times from reliable sources. Still have my original 45 (no skips or scratches) but wish I still had the pic sleeve to go with it!
