where's the best sounding source for this track? The only digital copy I have is on Place Pigalle (mono VGP version). Then there's Sucking in the 70s... presumably it sounds better on the original 45. But anywhere else?

Try the 2005 remastered Sucking In The Seventies CD.

A smacker of a track! GREAT! Gut bucket funk with some great raunch from Keif and Ronnie! So much atmosphere in this song it is almost dangerous. One of my favs from the Wood era.

I always thought of this one as "Miss Yous Dirty Little Sister" - too raw for a hit single, but absolutely great in its own right.

Several great (long!) versions of EITTG on Place Pigalle. This version was heavily tampered with edit-wise.

Great track! Mick and Ronnie at their best, imo.

Silver Dagger, why the Si Kirke reference?

And I would second what someone else suggested - quite likely Jagger on rhythm here.

I've always considered SG to be primarily a Jagger/Woods album. Jagger certainly getting more inspiration from Ronnie than Keith. Effectively he swapped Taylor for Wood to 'feed' off.

I was amazed to see him on the songs credits for this one.

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, electric guitar
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Ron Wood - electric guitar, backing vocals
Sugar Blue - harmonica
Mel Collins - saxophone
Simon Kirke - percussion
Hassan - percussion

oh - thanks - missed that in the initial post. Must pay more attention.

(I expected you meant on drums).

Yup, there's a tom-tom thang going on. Could be 'Hassan' there though!

Fantastic track.

You know, I don't think I have it on CD.

No. Not at all. Are there other versions of Too Many Cooks other than the Stones'?

I thought Ron had played bass on this, sure I read somewhere.

just did some googling and apparently the song debuted by a group called 100 Proof Aged In Soul in 1969...a minor hit for them...

For the Grateful Dead? I don't smoke weed. So therefor it probably won't sound good.

well there are PLENTY of drug alternatives, you know. i just don't understand the culture around here....the bumper stickers they were selling at the phish show last year are so on the mark:

"A Work-Free Drug Place!"

Nor do I. They sound good without it.

That's where an open mind helps.

But one must have an interest in the first place.

A Work Free Drug Zone. That's a good one.

Which consensus? Not everyone has commented (yet). Well, I won't. Don't like to spoil all the funcool smiley

I had almost forgotten about this one. Yes, it is very good and would work well live on stage.

And does not an Open mind facilitate the development of interest?

Too many dismiss the dead as a 'druggy' band. A hard-wired prejudice often develops after minimal, if any, exposure to their 'Canon'.

Pity.
Their loss.

If you dig rhythm of EISTTG you should be blown away by some of the rhythms and syncopations they can concoct. And it's ever so joyous!

Are you under the assumption that I have not HEARD the Grateful Dead? It seems that way.

the dead are definitely an acquired taste, unlike, i dare say, the stones, for instance. it took me years of false starts to really "get" the dead, but when i finally to get them...what a revelation and joy. it helps to be a jazz fan, i think. as someone once opined, the dead are a rock band based on jazz sensibilities, where the stones are a rock band based on blues sensibilities.

I like the part when Jagger sings:

Hey Baby, I'm tired, I'm tired of doing what I'm told......

Wow!

There really are a lot of time changes, and the drumming fits in well too. The Keith and Mick harmonizing is as good as I have heard.

I wish they would sing this one at their next concert, hopefully in 2010.

I like some of the Dead's tunes. But I'm not into them.

Anyway, this certainly is one of the Stones' best B-sides. I think my all time fave is still Through The Lonely Nights.
