I once heard Chrissie Hynde say that Middle of the Road is a note for note copy of Empty Heart...

That's one of the few I've never liked, to be honest ...

How do we know that the rhythm guitar is not by Brian?

Cos he was busy licking up a storm on harmonica.

So, the basic track has Keith on rhythm guitar and Brian on harmonica;
and overdubbed are: Keith - lead guitar/backing vocals and Brian - backing vocals.
MickĀ“s vocals/tambourine are also probably overdubbed.
Right?

By that time, Bill used to do some vocals. Is it true?

One of their best from the early years.

Never liked the song. Would have been right on a bootleg. Should have been replaced with one or two of the IBC demos.

I'm a big fan of the SACD of this song (along with most of the stuff recorded at Chess in 1964). Also, it's from the early era of MJ's voice - when he still had that youthful sound.

Searing blues, with that magical sound that they only captured at Chess and nowhere else. Dark lyrics that become even darker thanks to Brian's wailing harmonica and Keith's "I want to die" vox in the background. Fantastic stuff.

I love that era. A great track and I always heard Brian on it too.

For what its worth, when I saw the Stones do this number(its my all time favourite, etched into my brain)Brian played rythem and harp(a master of changing instruments without missing a beat)Bill did oo ooo oo sort of thing, Keith definately Yeah yeah yeah. It didnt sound any different live to the studio thing, (i could be biased here) Its not written in Bills book that they did this number or in the setlist for the 1965 tour, but they did do it in the second concert in Perth 65.

I'm honestly surprised some folks like this song.
I always thought it was one of their weaker efforts.
Different strokes for different folks I guess.
