The problem with these old Track Talk treads is you've got to browse them to remember if you contributed to them already. smoking smiley

Anyway, this song gave me the creeps when it came out, Rolling Stones sans audible guitars and Mick in falsetto? It just represented a direction I wish the Stones had never taken after knowing so well what they were capable of. Naming the record after this track was unforgivable to me back then. Mick and his disco/dance infatuation was a big distraction for the Stones and they've never really recovered to some extent.

Anyway it's interesting that Mick quotes Prince as someone else doing falsetto at the time, I get the feeling he was a big Prince fan. He also said: "Yeah, it's all a joke, really."

mick started it back with fool to cry though right? or maybe even before then. either way, it was worn out and tired by 1980 and the fact that prince used it with great success was not a worthy excuse ;-)

can you imagine knowing that "start me up" was in the can and releasing this instead?

I actually liked the way he did it with Fool To Cry. It was the combination of the disco/dance music and the falsetto that turned me off so much. SMU ? I dislike like only slightly less than ER so my opinion on that is probably not helpful.

Mick says he learned the technique from Don Covay. If you listen to Mercy Mercy by Covay, it's apparent Mick picked up more than just the falsetto from him. Their vocal approach is amazingly similar.

As far as SMU is concerned

The term in and of itself 'Emotional Rescue' is clever and original.
The song is highly entertaining. Excellent vocal and even some purring from MJ. Yes sir, I like Mick Jagger. This is him colored with fun and free.
Going to look up some live versions now (sounds like only in 2014?)

Mick on the song:
"I wrote that on an electric piano in the studio, then Charlie and Woody and I cut it immediately, live. It was all done very quickly. I think the vocals could've been better. It's just one of those recording-studio things. You would NEVER really write a song like that in REAL LIFE. Comes out in the studio, 'cause it's all ad-libbed, the end part. It was never planned like that... Yeah, it's all a joke, really.
"

Anywhoo, back to topic, if y'all are looking for Keith on Emotional Rescue, why he's right here on stage live first time performed 2013

The guitar work at the end with the call and response with the sax is nice.

Is this the only song in the history of rock that uses a straw and an instrument?

The unedited version is nice.

Agreed, but I still stand by my statement from 2010!

"I was embarrassed for the Stones when this came out as a single". Hahaha.>grinning smiley<

If there's such a thing as unstonesmanlike conduct, then this song deserves a massive penalty.
Maybe shown the yellow card, and if it happens again no choice but the red card.

‘You think you’re a special breed,
........... between my knee’
?

I like it when played at a gig. I skip it on the album. Not really worth mentioning this tiddy.

I like the studio recording better than live. That bass& drum pulsation has to be contained by the room; recorded live it looses its sound. Charlie and Bill are great on the original and then Mick is funny and great too. Ron & Keith are anecdotal here. I love that song like I love the Geico commercials; I know I shouldn't but I can help it.

Ronnie's bass playing on this track is pretty damn good, possibly his best with the Stones.

Ronnie plays the bass very well, I also really like Break the Spell. Very gifted at the bottom from my point of view, on the other hand he initially played bass with the Jeff Beck Group.

Emotional Rescue
(Mick Jagger / Keith Richards)

Pathé Marconi Studios (EMI Studios), Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris, France,
June 10 - October 19, 1979 and Electric Ladyland Studios, New York City,
New York, US, November - December 1979

Mick Jagger - lead vocals, backing vocals, electric piano
Keith Richards - electric guitar, backing vocals
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - synthesizer
Ron Wood - electric guitar, bass, backing vocals
Bobby Keys - saxophone
Michael Schrieve - percussion

Is there nothing I can say, nothing I can do
To change your mind, I'm so in love with you
You're too deep in, you can't get out, you're just a poor girl in a rich man's house
Yeah, baby, I'm crying over you
Don't you know promises were never made to keep
Just like the night, they dissolve up in sleep, I'll be your savior, steadfast and true
I'll come to your emotional rescue, I'll come to your emotional rescue

Yeah, the other night, crying, crying, baby, yeah I'm crying
Yeah, I'm like a child, baby, I'm like a child, baby
Child, yeah, I'm like a child, like a child, like a child, babe
You think you're one of a special breed, you think that you're his pet Pekinese
I'll be your savior, steadfast and true
I'll come to your emotional rescue, I'll come to your emotional rescue

Yeah, I was dreaming last night, last night, I was dreaming
How you'd be mine, but I was crying, like a child, yeah, I was crying
Crying like a child, you could be mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, all mine
You could be mine, could be mine, could be mine, all mine
I come to you so silent in the night, so stealthy, so animal quiet
I'll be your savior, steadfast and true
I'll come to your emotional rescue, I'll come to your emotional rescue
Yeah, you should be mine, mine, ooh
Yes, you could be mine, tonight and every night
I will be your knight in shining armour, coming to your emotional rescue
You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine
You will be mine, you will be mine, all mine
I will be your knight in shining armour
Riding across the desert with a fine Arab charger

Produced by The Glimmer Twins

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Emotional Rescue / Down In The Hole” 7” single
