OT - Your Top Ten "Oh My God!" albums at first listen
Posted by: Mongoose ()

Just feeling rather nostalgic this morning. I really miss those vinyl days of going to the local record shop and just looking at albums, checking out the cover art, learning about new bands. Every blue moon you'd buy an album just because the cover art looked cool.

Even more wonderful were those magical moments when you listened to that very special album....a listening session where the house could have been taken away by a tornado and you wouldn't have blinked....where you carefully studied the lyrics, the album credits, the photographs, and just immersed yourself in the moment.

If you were to make a list of your Top Ten albums that fit this category, what would they be? ONE ground rule: you may only mention an artist or group one time (even the Stones). With that in mind, and in no particular order, here's my

TOP TEN "OH MY GOD!" ALBUMS AT FIRST LISTEN

1. STONES - Let It Bleed
2. BEATLES - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
3. LED ZEPPELIN - first album
4. THE WHO - Tommy (although very tempted to say Quadrophenia!)
5. PINK FLOYD - Dark Side of the Moon
6. BLIND FAITH
7. JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - Are You Experienced?
8. CREAM - Disreali Gears
9. STEVIE WONDER - Songs in the Key of Life
10. JEFFERSON AIRPLANE - Volunteers

By the looks of your choosing I can see that you were blessed with a good date of birth. All those albums are from back when the majority of the world was interested in music, and the music was interesting enough to be interested in. It's not like that today I can assure you, and that's the reason that I never had an OMG experience with any new band ever. I really envy you mate.

I guess so.....I'm 52. My dad was a big band drummer in the 40s...I appreciated his music (Basie, Ellington, etc.) but it wasn't MY music. When the Beatles and Stones and Who and Kinks came out, it was like "THERE....FINALLY.....MY MUSIC!"

It's funny about that list. Just as soon as I posted it, I thought, "Dang, why did I leave out ALLMAN BROS. Live at Fillmore East!" For that matter, the MOTHERS OF INVENTION's Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Uncle Meat were also "OMG" albums.

And, you're right. It's a shame, but the world has moved on to other things. We had a circular here in Atlanta with CDs for sale from an electronics store...one of those "Today's Music! Today's Hits" kinda things. With the exception of about four artists, I had no earthly idea of who anybody was.

You're lucky my friend. And BTW: There'll always be albums where you think "Why did I leave this out". Take it from an esteemed list-maker. :-D

dammit: i just read a cool statement about that stunning moment in the 1960s when popular music
became one of the main repositories for ideas - "if you had something to say you put it in a song" -
what a cool and true insight, and i can't remember where i read it. which may be one of the drawbacks
of being the same age as Mongoose. :E but indeed: what an amazing era to become music-conscious in

I used to think this until I actively went out and searched for good stuff... There's been plenty 'new' albums, lets say in the past 10 years, that have been nothing but fantastic.

The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street (72)
Dinamit - A Híd (80)
P Box - Kö kövön (83)
Sweet - Desolation Boulevard (first in stereo) (74)
Deep Purple - Machine Head (71/72)
Doors - Strange Days (67)
TSOOL - Welcome to the Infant Freebase (96)
Omega - 200 Years After The Last War (75) *
Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run (75)
Pink Floyd - Meddle (71)

Bubblin': Gasolin' - Live Sådan (76)

* Review [www.progarchives.com]

Quote: Omega's second album to feature previously recorded songs
in the Hungarian language on the Bellaphon label.
A good introduction to the more progressive-rock sounding era
of their long career (42 years and counting!) featuring everything
from mellotrons, moog synthesisers and a 20 minute show piece which
features sevral sections beginning with a moody opening building up
to a bluesy center section with all kinds of drum and guitar fills a
nd back to a moody ending. Side two contains three very different
tracks which demonstrates different approaches this band took with
their early seventies music from the synthesiser dominated Help To find Me
to the heavier You Don't Know whose organ intro could easily be mistaken
for a Deep Purple riff. The title track is very folky and is
very reminicient of the earlier music they recorded in the late 60's.
The only drawback, as on just about every English-language Omega album,
is the sometimes very poor english text and hard to understand lyrics.
Otherwise an excellent example of early 1970's progressive rock.
(Ian Gledhill)
