As has become obvious, for me it is Bruce and the E Street Band. While the Stones are universal, the ESB focuses on the American condition. Perhaps not so strangely, Springsteen is very popular in Europe. Why? The closest I can figure is that he sings about an America as it SHOULD be, and the things that keep it from happening. This makes him a pretty good musical ambassador, IMHO.
Sometimes it is The Doors, other times its Thin Lizzy, or Animals, or Gasolin', or Deep Purple or Black Sabbath with Ozzy/Dio or P Box or P mobil or Hobo Blues band..

I dont think its a strange phenomenon. Good songwriting (even if the location of the subject matter tends to be 'localised') should always be able to 'translate' as human experiences are universal.
To me its more an accomplishment that ANY artist manages to strike any kind of chord with an audience whose first language is different than their own. I think thats something that those of us who live in English-speaking countries tend to overlook or take for granted.
Yeah Bassplayer. I'm right their with you on Bruce & The E Street Band. My clear #2. Which is why I'll be seeing back to back Bruce shows in a couple of weeks.

the stones have always been number one. in high school, the 2nd favorite band was the ramones. in college, the dead. unspecified in the 90s. last few years, incubus (older stuff).
