Wasn't it Helsinki Aug 2nd 1970? I think that was the conclusion from last thread about this. RFK Memorial Stadium in 1972 was also among the early ones

i had a look on google - interestingly, i knew the beatles done shea stadium - but this one in 1965 was billed as being the first "major" outdoor concert which set the precedent

[en.wikipedia.org]

I wondered if the stones did do anything earlier then 70?..

I spose you cant class hyde park as a stadium but certanly on the scale..and some..

Isn't a speedway sort of like a stadium for race cars? If so, then West Palm Beach 1969

it wasn't - the Crawdaddy Club's second home was in a clubhouse sort of thing on the athletic grounds.

finetuning a little: in addition to the Crawdaddy Club, in 1963 they played at the Jazz Festival
on the Richmond Athletic Ground, and i believe that was in a tent sort of set-up outside.
still, it wouldn't do to call that a stadium scenario :E

I'm pretty sure the 1972 RFK Stadium concert in Washington D.C. was the first stadium show they ever played in America and I think it was the only stadium show on that particular tour. I think about half of their '75 tour was stadium shows. '75 is often mentioned as being the first real stadium tour that anyone had done since the Beatles in '66, but actually, CSNY, with Joni Mitchell opening, toured stadiums in '74.

Los Angeles went "STADIUM" in 1978 and never went back (except for NO SECURITY in 1999 and a few times during the last tours - like the LA FORUM, STAPLES CENTER, and WILTEN THEATER - did I miss any?). 69, 72, and 75 were better in a way cause they were Arena shows but I've NEVER been a Stadium fan anyway.... Walked out of PINK FLOYD'S ANIMALS concert at ANAHEIM STADIUM cause the sound was such sh*t.....

I saw them at RFK Stadium in D.C. on July 4, 1972; so that might have been one of the first; they played second base area; i was sitting on the home team dugout. It was my first stadium show anyway. Then I saw them in msg a couple of weeks later, an indoor arena; so it was interesting to see the contrast in venues on the very same tour, within a short while of each other, with both the stones and stevie, sonically, energy=wise etc...

What sort of a stadium was that? See, just because a venue has the word stadium in its name, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a real stadium. For instance, as early as 1964, the Stones played Olympia Stadium in Detroit, but really, it was nothing of the sort. Olympia Stadium was actually an indoor hockey arena like Madison Square Garden. In 1966 they played outdoors at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens, New York, but that could hardly be called a stadium show. Seating capactiy was only around 16,000.

Already in 1965 they played several stadiums in the U.S.

See my earlier post. Also, when they DID play large venues on the early US tours, booked by overly optimistic promoters, they were generally playing to empty seats.
