Where Were You August 16, 1977?
Posted by: FrankM ()

Do you remember where you were when you heard the bad news about the passing of Elvis?

I must have been about nine at the time and was on my way home from a vacation in Virginia with my family. We were all in shock when we heard the news over the car radio.

I was 11 and a half and had just gotten back from a family vacation in the Florida Keys. Other than that news story upon our return, the highlight of my vacation that year was my older sister's friend Wendy Wood who went with us. I can still picture a polaroid that was taken of them in their bikinis standing in our hotel room. Man was she smokin'! Wendy didn't look bad either! That's a joke. What isn't a joke is the awkward wood that Miss Wood generated daily. Let's just say that my back got very sunburned that trip.

I know that feeling. My sister is only a year and a half older than me and I remember the excitement that was generated when her friends hung out at our house or went with us on trips.

I remember one of her friend going with us to Six Flags Great Adventure and sitting in front of me on the log flume. Yowsa yowsa yowsa.

I was 18 at the time and not into Elvis. Took note because he was a famous person, but that's about all I can remember.

Be that as it may - RIP, Elvis.

Strange experience yesterday... was nosing around some record stores and under "Presley" there was a small, empty section for Elvis, and 2 CDs by Lisa Marie. The mind boggles...

I was at home and saw the news on TV. I remember there was an interview with a fan outside Gracelands who said "Dead or alive Elvis Presley will always be the King of Rock 'n' Roll". At the time I thought yeah right but it has proven to be true.

As Neil Young wrote soon after "The King is gone but he's not forgotten"

This whole story basically sums it up for me (even though I had seen him live months earlier in Southern Cal cause I had a crazy friend from Palm Springs -actually a Montreal, Quebec boy that was hanging out in PS for a few years for the babes and desert sun.He was an ELVIS nut and dragged me to the show. Still not that big of a fan, the pre-war/draft Elvis is the best part of his work IMHO. Went to Graceland years ago and found it quite sad. It was very depressing what a trap/jail/cage this guy ended up living in - everybody was having fun off of Elvis' money and success except Elvis. Col. Tom and all the low life snakes hanging around, bunch of parasites - but he wasn't strong enough to get rid of 'em - the story too often I'm afraid.

I was 23 and to be honest not really shocked back then he was frequently in the news about his home in (Fort Knox) where he locked him self up the use of medicines his over weight and he was 20 years older then me so I saw him as an old man.

Although I wasn't an Elvis fan back then I love a lot of his tunes, number one "Heartbreak Hotel"

I escaped exactly one week later, 23rd August!

I was still a sparkle in my dad's eye when Big El died. It's so sad really. He was one of the greatest.

On a camping holiday with my parents, we were at Ayr in Scotland.

Elvis' death was announced late evening in the UK on 'News At Ten' (by the late, great Reggie Bosanquet) so not having TV access the first I knew about it was when we switched the radio on the next morning and they were talking about him in the past tense.

very hard to take in because, as someone commented at the time, "I die, you die - Elvis presley doesnt"

Mr Jimmy, 30 ain't nothin - enjoy it, just wait, it's later on that really spins you into a deep depression (but you did miss the 60's, an amazing decade, one of the few - amazingly great and amazingly horrible but always very very special)

A 16 year old working as a busboy/dishwasher at a Holiday Inn. The waitresses were all crying. Sad day. Long live the King.

Same place 2 months later when the Free Bird went down. Another sad day.

I recall my mother coming into my bedroom at home to tell me she'd just heard it, on the TV I guess ? I was 22 in 1977, just finished university and was back home before setting out on life ... jeez it seems a lifetime and a half ago.

Packing up for my Sophmore year at college (Arizona State University), from my home town of Radford, VA. I had just returned from the Led Zeppelin show in Tempe, Arizona.

I was 18, in a squat in Crystal Palace, London and was constantly speeding. As such very little penetrated by comfortable numbness and I had very little reaction to it. I do remember being appalled when details of his daily diet emerged but that was probably a bit later on. I also remember the TV - there were only 3 channels in the UK at that time - showing a lot of Elvis films for a good week after.

I was in my car, on my way to a store called Korvettes, near Roosevelt Field, Long Island, New York. I used to buy LPs there for around $2.99.

I was driving home from work and had on a 'new wave' station out of NYC (WPIX) and they played 3 Elvis songs in a row before announcing it. I knew something was up, why would they be playing him on this station? I was pissed 'cause I was going to see him soon at Nassau Coliseum. He really did start it all, without him there is no British invasion.
