Everything came to a complete stop - it was if Jesus just died.

Me? I went to the liquor store
and I bought a bottle of wine and a bottle of gin...

Oh wait. That was Phil Lynott.

I was actually sitting on some grass by our house and a friend came by and said Elvis died. I said "Pfft! Yeah sure." I didn't believe him.

Here's a good youtube of Phil doing King's Call

I was 13 and very aware of Elvis. My uncle was a hard-core fan.

I heard it on the radio. Dad was taking me to pick up my
books for Freshman year of high school.

I also remember that we went out for Italian food that night.
No connection obviously.

IORR............but I like it!

I was seven years old when this tragedy happened. But although being a child i remember the big Headlines in the papers and how my parents and others were shocked. And i even remember watching Aloha from Hawaii broadcasted on tv, about two years earlier (so i was five then) along with my parents and some neighbours. This concert broadcasted live in the whole world via satellite was the biggest bang that time. That's amazing for me ,i don't have too many totally clear pictures of the early periods in my life, but that's something i remember so well like it happened last year.

I was 14 going on 15, Being woken up in bed before school and told by my mum that Elvis had died.

Fast forward to December 1980 - the exact same thing. ;-) (Only this time Lennon died)

I have no recollection of that day. Elvis to me was a fat guy who appealed to my friend's moms. My familiarity was from seeing him in his teeny bopper movies.
But in the next couple of years I started seeing film clips from his earlier performances (thanks to PBS). I remember the first one I saw it took about 15 seconds to know why he was the king.

Home from College, my Mom heard it on the radio and told me. Didn't really have much of a reaction. Elvis was OK to me in 1977, but not special. I was already into the Stones and Dylan heavily for several years.

His legend has grown on me throughout the years.

Everyone was walking around their faces tripping them.

I asked jokingly, who died, as you do.

Everyone started wailing and sobbing Elvis is Dead.

Not the reception you want on your Birthday.

But I remember my mom being sad because she was a pretty big Elvis fan...................RIP Elvis. I will have a peanut Butter and bannana sandwhich in your honor. (maybe not).

I grew up in Memphis and was at home watching TV late in the afternoon when the local news broke in that Elvis had been taken to Baptist Central on Union Avenue. Soon they came back and said he was dead.

I was only 13 and very surprised when later that night they were running special broadcasts on national news. At that age I really didn't realize that he was that famous.

When John was shot in 1980, now that was a big deal to me.

I was in a wonderful record store called Licorice Pizza
(anyone who lived in LA at that time will remember).
One of the stoner Gimme Shelter-Altamont clerks
(they all seemed to be those types) said "Wow, Elvis died.
Let's play Elvis records." So they did.
The legacy of Elvis didn't hit me 'til later on
when I got all the Sun session records, which most of us my age
didn't know about at the time.
Actually, I was more upset when Groucho Marx died three days later.
I was (still am) a huge Marx Brothers fan,
and Groucho's death was kind of pushed aside at the time,
it being Elvis and all. Both huge Americon icons.

notice that the Stones are amazing when you think about the difficult task it is to deal with notoriety. When you are at the top, the next step is to fall down. Examples for musicians ? Hendrix, Elvis, Mozart, Morrisson and...more

I was a student in Glasgow at the time. Learned the news off the board of a guy selling newspapers outside Central Station in Union Street (and can almost see the spot from my office window as I write). Didn't have a TV in the flat I shared at the time, so must have been the next morning.

Slightly OT. Newsreader Reginald Bosanquet - mentioned by Gazza and vudicus - went on to become rector of Glasgow University. I attended a couple of parties around the time of his election and confirm that he was a man who enjoyed a drink or seventeen....

I was in Argyle.

Will someone please explain what is so special about Elvis Presley, (apart from the name perhaps)?

A few good early records?

King of Rock'n'Roll? Nonsense.

It's been obvious since, well, mid-sixties really, that the white boy Jagger from England owns that crown. Certainly the '69 American tour secured it. Elvis was just a joke by '65. Then, later, a bloated joke with silly costumes playing Vegas and similar venues. Stones are almost there now.

Wyman rated some of his early (Sun?) stuff - so maybe that's what the fuss is about. But I can't see Mick Keith or Brian sourcing this material in their youth - they went straight to the hard-core of the genuine article.

Beats me really.

i guess people will always pick fault - elvis wasnt the only on wearing "silly costumes" in the 70s winking smiley - ask Mick, he carried on wearing them into the 80s..

OK Elvis was bloated - more so from Drugs as much as eating - he did excercise and diet - stuff like diazapam and morphene did contribute to rapid weight gain in the last 12 months..

but he aint the only one to do drugs winking smiley - ask keith, he's been affected in different ways by em...

they all got their faults but theyre all good......after all who else will be as big 30 years after his death?

thats actually where youre quite wrong. They discovered the more bluesy stuff later. Keith's love of early Elvis and particularly how much "I'm left youre right shes gone" is a personal favourite is well documented.

Keith and Woody's guest appearances on that Scotty Moore/DJ Fontana album from 1997 would make it quite obvious that they're big fans of this stuff.

Nice sidestep of the late 60's return to form there.

Vegas and similar venues? The Stones have sold out to that end of the blue-rinse high-roller market more than Elvis ever did. And dont get me started on silly costumes.

For the record, he toured far more in the 70s (ASIDE from playing Las Vegas) than the Stones did in that decade or the next one. This stereotype of Elvis doing little but play casinos is utter myth.

as for this 'bloated' nonsense. Wasnt always the case anyway even in the 70's. However, it always amuses me when Stones fans who are always so sensitive about remarks from the media and public in general about how old and wizened their heroes look, still manage to get worked up about the less than youthful or svelte appearance of someone else. Theres really no difference in being overweight at 42 than there is at being haggard when youre 63. It hardly matters does it.
