What are the Rolling Stones most complex songs in a musical sense?
Posted by: guyrachel ()
Date: January 7, 2010 09:58

I was thinking "Moonlight Mile" & "How Can I stop" as possibles, to my ears. I don't play an instrument or read guitar, so I'd love to hear the opinion of all those who do?

Thanks.

Midnight Rambler
Can't You Hear Me Knockin'
Moonlight Mile
Let It Loose
Dance

The songs are not as complex technically, as they are within the dynamics. Dance is the one that is hard to pull off technically. At least today winking smiley

The strength of the stones is that the songs are not complex, they're not Yes or ELP thankfully

Continental Drift?

Songfacts:

In 1989, The Rolling Stones went to Tangier, Morocco for 3 days to record this song with the Master Musicians of Jajouka led by Bachir Attar for the Stones' album Steel Wheels. After the recording sessions, Mick Jagger visited the village of Jajouka, which Brian Jones had visited in 1968. This song marked a return to the world music The Stones experimented with in the '60s.

Musically it is quite complex. Not sure if the parts in Tangier were recorded on a studio or in exteriors. Anyway, this is always a contraversial song here but mostly
because it is a love it or hate it song.

Obviously complex is a relative term, I would say that although MR is simple in structure, it is involved, and the thematic/rythmic juxtaposition make it qualify as "complex" in my book, so any other ideas I'd love to hear about, could Gimme Shelter be seen as one?

Continental Drift, the music by the Stones, is nothing substantial in terms of - it's a Jagger Primitive Cool leftover is what it is. It has to be - it sounds like one.

The instrumental part was recorded in Jajouka outside, not in a studio.

Moonlight Mile isn't exactly complex. Parts of Can't You Hear Me Knocking are, as are parts of Monkey Man. 100 Years Ago is pretty straight forward actually.

Let It Loose, maybe Time Waits For No One, maybe. I guess it depends on what 'complex' means.

The worst part of writing or figuring out a song to me is actually writing down the words, chords, verses/chorus/bridge/lead ride stuff.

I would think the Stones let someone do this for stuff like "If You ReallY ..." or "Memory Motel", for example. MR has several different parts, though not so complex.

Lots of stones song are complex musically.
Just some:

let it loose
moonlight mile
can you hear the music
tops
can't you hear me knocking

Shine a light and especially She's a rainbow got really simple and standard chords progression, is the arrangement that make them sound complex

Before they make me run hasnt really typical pop song chords structure, but still has strong melody

100 years ago got often used pop chords progression in the first part, the interesting thing is that it changes totally at mid song.

And, Brown Sugar riff (the one after the very first riff) is more original and complex progression than it seems.

This is the Stones genius, making musically not-so-easy songs sounds simple.

The ones I can think of are all '67-'73, interestingly between their 2 most 'psychadelic/musically adventurous' LPs, Satanic and Goat's Head:

Gomper
The Lantern
Alladin Story(?)-outtake that starts almost like a Paint It Black riff w/horns
She's a Rainbow
CYHMKnocking
Let It Loose

Coming Down again
Can You Hear the Music

As others have noted, some of their complexity can be in phrasing, not complex chord structures. A great example of that is HonkyTonk Women; I have NEVER heard anyone, live Stones included, who could do the guitar part right after the C chord between "Memphis" and "She tried to.." with the exact timing of the studio cut.

I've never heard anyone that can play the WHOLE honky tonk woman with that groove and phrasing XD
Just like Brown Sugar, Cant you hear me knocking, JJF, etc. etc..

Most people think Keith Richards guitar is some kind of simple and easy thing to play. When u get into it, u discover how much is complex really.

spot on, farawayeyes2, it's in the milliseconds of timing that is his feel/inspiration/soul.

this does takes a bit of practice and cannot be played and sung at the same time, need another singer.
same for chmk , the rhythm playing is too complex to sing as well.
no singing no problem.

I really enjoy threads about technical aspects of the Stones' music.

I Wish I could play and sing.

Just Want To See His Face is actually pretty, but again, it's the groove more than the chord progression or time signature.

I play guitar and for me Monkey Man is not that easy. Also, Angie is tough, not the basic chords but the little fills and things Keith plays, and the way he plays them. That for me is what's so tough about the Stones guitar-wise, it's not the chords or basic structures, it's all the little things and the way they play them. Especially if it's involves one of Keith's open tunings. Midnight Rambler is another example. Very simple song as far as the chords and basic structure go, but to play it all the way through correctly is not as simple as some might think. That's why so many people are listing it, despite some others disagreeing.
