supposably he cut a few more new vocals from that era of songs for the ne'er-to-be released rumor or album, called Memory Hotel...songs like Fiji Jim, for instance....

I've often wondered if the Fiji Jim rumor is true. How did that rumor start? Any reliable sources? Did someone mention it in an interview or something?

How great would it be to hear that one re-done like So Young... can't even begin to imagine!

i read/heard about it in several sources, including a pretty reliable inside source who confirmed it - i think there is such an album in the can somewhere - the stones opted against it at the time due to understandable salability concerns...

How is Mannish Boy and Dance Pt 2 a rarity? Especially when sucking in the 70s was also released.

I think any track limited to Promo release or one country should have been the rules:

Harlem Shuffle (Live)/Let It Rock (Live) - U.K. Only
Winning Ugly (N.Y. Mix) - Canada Only
Angie (Live)/I Just Want To Make Love To You (Live) - Japan Only

I don't think I need to list all the promos.

And then if there is still a need for more tracks use all the vinyl only '12 mixes and B Sides.

I believe Bill Cosby answered, "as to the why question - why is there air?" with "I don't know, ask the basketball."

In an interview with (if I recall it right) a german guitar player magazine Chris Kimsey stated that the Stones instructed him to go through the archives and find releasable material for the Voodoo Lounge project, if not for the album, at least for use as singles b-sides. He said that he found "a handful of tracks" and specifically mentioned So Young, Fiji Jim, Shame Shame Shame, We Had It All, Lets Go Steady. He mentioned that for a couple of tracks, Jagger had to record new vocals because the original recordings had only guide vocals. He regretted that only So Young was used because he thought that the tracks he found were all "pretty good". So, yes, its pretty definitive that some archives tracks were worked on (and finished?) during the Voodoo Lounge sessions, and this unreleased Memory Hotel album project most probably would have included them - amongst more recent outtakes.

Fiji Jim is one of my favourite Stones outtakes, and theres a finished version in the vaults, with new vocals from the VL sessions, just like So Young!

With some effort - they could finish some of these songs and release a "Rarities Vol II" - or they could have done a real "Voodoo Lounge Deluxe" version with the unreleased songs added - for that sake also with B&B, SG, EOMS. That would have been a great treat. There quite many of these songs out circulating already. But sadly it seems our guys are too lazy / laid back to do it.

I confirm this as I remember a Chris Kimsey interview in a French magazine in july/august 1994 where he mentionned having recently worked on So Young, Fiji Jim, Shame Shame Shame, We Had It All, Lets Go Steady and maybe some other tracks (I thought there were 8 tracks in total but can't remenber what were the 3 others...)

Ah ha! Pretty funny that the 'forward looking' Jagger would want to work on old recordings!

Its nothing new exactly. For Exile they used some songs that were composed as early as 1969 and did not make it on Let It Bleed or Sticky Fingers. Well, Tattoo You is the most famouse "archive exploitation" album. Undercover has Too Tough which is based on a Black And Blue-era instrumental. Just some examples for the fact that they did not always start a new album from scratch, but listened to old and unused ideas from previous recording sessions.

Oh I'm aware of all of that. But to go from recordings done in 1977-79 and work on them in 1994? It's just a hilariously huge difference.

On paper, yes. But play Fancy Man Blues (1989), The Storm (1994), So Young (1977, vocals 1994) and Jump On Top Of Me (1994) in a row - does anything sound out of place?

I'm curious about So Young. He did a new vocal for it during the Voodoo sessions? For certain? The big question there is, or maybe several of 'em - why that song? Why then? Why not something else? Was it actually done then? Are there more?

ETC...

In the beginning, the "Jump Back" compilation was supposed to contain some unreleased trax. "So Young", "Fiji Jim" and some other trax were redone for this purpose. At this date, "So Young" surfaced on a VL single b-side.

They should have taken "Mannish Boy" off and replaced it with "I think I'm Going Mad".Don't get me wrong Mannish Boy is a great song ,but it is already on Love You Live and Sucking in The Seventies. It is hardly a rare song at all."Live with me" is already on Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out and No Security and should have been replaced with something else.

It's one of the most common stones outtakes, and IMO one of Keiths most moving studio performance.
