I am doing research on how to write up a music contract. For example: We are starting up an indie label, and we want to sign a local band, how would you go about doing that, thanks for the info.
Jb... yes, heard of him. Kind of weird - a guy many people hate, but yet many people know him. And he sure is doing very well at what he does. Like Mathijs.

Have you checked your local library to see what they have or can order for you. Billboard, I believe, has titles you might be interested in. Also check Amazon for ideas to ask the library about.

CrazyDadda, You must be somewhat Crazy if you think a Lawyer is gonna do ANYTHING for you for free, I mean, those sharks charge you every time they fart..... Time for a lot of internet and book research.....
AND I am planning to open myself an indie label (sooner or later). My intention is to base it on a non-copyright system. See link below.

If you want to follow the old way, every different jurisdiction has its own different rules (although the general principles on IP protection are quite similar in most countries). I am based in Italy: unless you are a spagetti-eater too, there is nothing much I can do to help, but for sure I can address you to someone who can.

p.s. It's 500 euros for the above legal advice. Please send details for invoicing.
p.p.s. After the 30 year old lawyer died, he screamed to St. Peter "how can you do this to me? a heart attack at my age! I'm only 30!"
Replied St. Peter "well, when we looked at your total billable hours, we figured out you had to be at least 95 ..."

Hey, I'm a lawyer!! We're all not that bad-- at least I like to think of myself as a pretty decent guy (and attorney!). I will admit though-- there are plenty of skunks out there though!
okay, okay, I will lay off on the lawyer jokes.......I had a real bad experience once with a lawyer that was supposed to look out for MY best interest and I ended up getting screwed royally....and yes I blame the lawyer.......he took advantage of my trust and kindness....and I payed dearly for it....I still am.....grrrrr!!!

i've got an independent label, have had for 5 years. and i've released records from bands from all over the world without any problems
we don't do contracts, we shake hands and agree a deal. thats the way it should be
I'm a lawyer as well, and I deal with he copyright field. The jokes above on the lawyers are hilarious!!! But in my field, client are much harder to deal with than lawyers.
