Getting to the O2 is easy-peasy, piece of cake.
There is an underground station right next to it.

You won't have to shell out for a place to stay nearby, just find somewhere close to an underground station.

There is a Hilton next door but it is quite expensive. I would not stay in that area. It is sort of business like new development Docklands area. Get into the city or at least across the Thames. Saves you some money and it's only a few tube stations away.

Bjornulf you are spot on. The area around the O2 arena is called Canary Wharf, lots of rich people live there, I imagine what nightlife there is is pretty sterile, and the area outside canary wharf is the opposite, pretty rough.

You can get the Jubilee line (underground / tube) which is four or five stops from Waterloo station (eurostar) and waterloo is a huge train station with great connections in the heart of london. Just a short walk to Big Ben, Westminster Abbey etc...
