Why haven't we seen official releases of Let's Spend The Night Together or 25 X 5?

Greetings Everyone,
As aluded to in the subject above, with bands putting old VHS concerts back into print with DVD, such as Pink Floyd's release of their 1994 Division Bell concerts and so on, Why have we not seen Let's Spend The Night Together or 25 X 5 on DVD in an offical capacity? Does it simply boil down to distribution rights or other projects down the pike? I was quite pleased to see Rock And Roll Circus make it but what of the rest?

In time we'll probably see it. They gotta milk whatever they've got in the vaults for a while: for whatever many years the Stones will be around and then for the next several decades after the Stones have died/disbanded.

Fifty years from now...we'll get almost all the things we've been clamoring for.

Re : 25 x 5.

Its 17 years out of date already. Not much point putting out a commercial release of a documentary which covers little more than half of the band's career

Gazza, That's true but if for nothing else than maybe posterity sake? Well then there's always things like Ladies and Gentleman which are even less likely.

Because people only want the greatest hits songs, the re-release of Jump Back has sold much more copies than Live Licks, ABB and Rarities combined, the R&R Circus DVD only lasted 2 weeks on the DVD chart.

Let's Spend is available commercially in Europe. It went to the 5 bucks bin within a week, and my guess is that this is the reason why Promopub BV isn't too interested in releasing it in a big fashioned way.

Its weird because in a big music store it wont sell, there is a market out there for it, theres lots of people like us who would buy it.

The Jump Back thing is such a drag. Not the record but the fact it has sold more than Live Licks and the rest. Sometimes the mind boggles at the fact that a lot of crap product floods the market while other things that should have been released years ago rot away on the shelves until it's too late to release because they've deteriorated or have simply vanished.

1962-2007=45X5!!!

Most of the material on 25X5 is anyhow in Mr Kleins posession. Stones just do not have any say over that video... Mr Klein will be in the picture if it ever will be released on DVD... = no go, will never see a official DVD release....

This is unfortunatelu a sad result of the problems in between Stones and ABKCO today. All pre 1971 stuff is controlled by Mr Klein and all post 1971 is then Stones controlled. Material with both pre and post 1971 material has to be agreed on by both Stones and Klein.....

So, if ya want 25X5 on DVD.. just burn your own copy....

Well guys, what about things like Ladies and Gentleman, The Rolling Stones? The tv special or the film. By the way, Did the film ever make it onto VHS? I've got a couple of versions of the TV special but nothing for the film.

>> 1962-2007=45X5!!! <<

well ... it equals (30x5)+(15x4) which doesn't make for quite such a catchy title

Posterity's sake for the benefit of a few completists doesnt make commercial sense, unfortunately. Its a documentary - there wouldnt be sufficient interest. It was released on video prior to the DVD era and putting out a half-told story in 2007 that ended in 1989 just seems half-arsed.

Well then there's always

but which, as its a concert film, would make more commercial sense. It'll come out eventually I'm sure because, like R&R Circus, its a finished project.

I guess Scorsese's film really won't be a history as such. There should be another that brings 25 x 5 up to date. I am sure this will eventually, if nothing else as a PBS or European equivalent documentary in who knows how many years.

The old bastard Klein, how old is he now? How is his health? When's he going to die anyway?

Why do you think that? Here's a description from imdb:

"A career-spanning documentary on the Rolling Stones, with concert footage from their "A Bigger Bang" tour."

I'm sure he'll take advantage of whatever footage is put as his disposal (as he did with NO DIRECTION HOME).

he's 75. ironically enough, he shares his birthday with Keith Richards

His demise wouldnt really change things anyway. I would imagine that the family business would pass to his next of kin, probably his son Jody who had a lot to do with the remastering of the ABCKO Stones albums five years ago.

It seems that things between ABKCO and the Stones have warmed slightly. Jody may be the average fan's biggest ally toward releasing stuff.

BTW, I'd buy both of these on DVD in a minute.

Jump Back has sold 1.2 million copies since the 2004 US re-release, the combined sales for LL (125k) ABB (530k) and Rarities (130k) is less than 800k.

ARTE is a joint French & German channel. Not the same as TV5.

What about Charlie Is My Darling? Who's got distribution rights to that one?

Peter Whitehead, maybe?

Cant see it being released on DVD either. It never even got a proper release to begin with as by the time it was finished they'd moved on to the extent where they thought it already obsolete.

Andrew Oldham has shown it a few times at various exhibitions and arts festivals over the last few years though.

Yes, and it shows why record companies would always opt for another greatest hits compilation instead of resurrecting interesting material from the shelves. And the Stones are not too interested either. When you compare Jump Back's sales to ABB's sales the Stones undoubtedly ask themselves why they should record another album with entirely new stuff. And the sales of LL and Rarities are not too mouth-watering either for them. It's a pity, but there is noone in the Stones camp with an attitude like: "What the ****, who cares how much it will sell, the music is great, we need to get it out!"

Not so with every artist, but absolutley so with the Stones.

Well if the new stuff was GOOD, it WOULD sell.

I think it's a matter of "Don't release Ladies and Gents, or Let's Spend the Night films on DVD! And for GOD's sake, don't put out a 1978 archive live album! We don't want kids getting into this superior era of ours of which we are unable to match onstage anymore! Crank out a recent show!"
