Blinded By Rainbows.......
Date: May 21, 2006 17:21

For the first time, I really sat down and listened to it words and all. It was never one of my favorites of Voodoo Lounge. There is some pretty deep words in there. For example:

-Did you ever feel the pain, that he felt upon the cross?
-Did you ever feel the knife, tearing flesh that is so soft?
-Did you ever feel the blast, as the sentex bomb goes off?
-Did you ever hear the screams as the limbs are torn off?
-Did you ever shed a tear, as the war drags on and on?

Mick has some pretty deep lyrics in here. I just sat back and was like...wow....for a minute you know. Anyone else discover this and what are your thoughts on the song. What do you think Mick is trying to say or get across?

"She's got a mind of her own, yeah, and she use it mighty fine..."

Blinded by Rainbows is one of my favourite ballads although most people don't like it very much.
I really like the way the sound increases and reaches the top with Ronnie's great solo on this one.
The lyrics are about the war in Northern Ireland which was pretty heavy way back then. Mick wrote this song for Wandering Spirit (1993) but thought it would fit better on the next Stones record - similar to Don't Stop.

Blinded by rainbows is one the greatest songs
the Stones ever recorded IMHO.

The lyrics is so stunning and shows depth and
emotions of wars horror.

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

how do you know it, can you post any source you got this information from? It somehow doesn't work for me if you consider all known outtakes of Blinded By Rainbows including one of the earliest where they just jamm and make this song becoming 'something' as well as Mick is working on lyrics too. It's an outtake from Voodoo Loiunge sessions, so I seriously doubt Mick wrote it for WS and than gave Ronnie, Keith and Charlie to play it.

a song itself is outstanding. the way it grooves, I just love it. just getting stronger and more powerful second by second and at the end it explodes. I love lyrics too.

Even if the inspiration was civil war in Northern Ireland it'd fit for all wars in the world. When I heard it first it thought it would be about the war in former Yugoslavia.
I still like that tune and enjoy listining to it. IMO it's one of the best songs the Stones have released within the last 17 year.

imo war lyrics are usually obvious......all the current anti-bush lyrics are obvious and trendy..........for "Blinded By Rainbows" i would've preferred "personal" lyrics instead, but i do like the tune.....especially the chorus

I know the versions featured on Voodoo Brew (or is it Stew). They sound even better in my opinion.
I read somewhere that this song was written for Wandering Spirit...and found the source again. Look in Martin Elliots book "The Complete Recording Sessions 1962 - 2002). There he writes on page 362 that it is a left-over from Mick's WS sessions.

I was writing it at the end of the Wandering Spirit album. I was sort of halfway through with it, and I thought,
Well, this would be better suited to the Rolling Stones' next album. It was all kind of in my head, rather than written down.
But you know, it's pretty strong. I think it's good to have one like that on the record, it shakes you up a bit.
Otherwise all the songs are about girls and cars and immaturity.

I dig the tune aside from the line "do you see the face of Christ, into paradise... i doubt it". But thats Jagger. Cant say I agree with his morality in general. I just like the music. winking smiley

What an emotive heart wrenching song ' Blinded by Rainbows really is.
This song is full of pure emotion and the lyrics fully sum up acts perpetrated by terrorists who use religion as a vehicle to wage vengeance upon innocent people.

i love it also...
kinda like a more modern day Ruby Tuesday...
like a ballad but with chollie it's always something just a little specially something else.

find it powerful and moving and melodic and nice harmonies and singing.
i thought several on voo doo lounge surprisingly touching
new faces, moon is up...baby break it down...
like they were writing a lot of good and diverse stuff...
like mick or both of them were trying to open up a little more...lyrically and emotionally
not at all color by numbers....
do like several others on vl also...

I've always liked this song. But guitar players (at this forum) mean the solo is horrible.

it's a good song. VL's chock full of 'em. (unlike the two albums that followed . . .)

beely beely borrect!

new faces (which i've often termed a remix of Lady Jane) is great , and Moon Is Up, along with Almost Hear You Sigh, is the best "new era" Stones song of 'em all!

Beelyboy is very often correct.....and I really agree with you on Moon is Up and AHYS. Moon Is Up is really a masterpiece in my ears.....it's such a timeless sound.

p.s. isn't the sheppards bush version of Moon Is Up wonderful?

Oh yeah I love that live version.
When it comes to GHS.....I feel a bit sorry for you for not liking it....you're missing a really nice atmosphere. It's wierd with music, once you made up your mind about something...it's hard to change.
I really feel weak in my knees by Coming Down Again, for example.

True enough. Oh well, I think one day you'll see that it's just not a very good album. (heartbreaker blows, i'm sorry to have to break it to you.) In the meantime, it's time for a Parisian sleep. Have a good Norwegian night!

Nikki, have you heard the famous Brussels bootleg from 73....it gives new life to the songs? (If you haven't I'll send it).
Good night.

I've always liked Moon Is Up - but Shepards Bush, Moon Is Up - I love
'cause you can hear the Riffmaster's guitar so clear
,,,,,,,,,and it hurts so good.

Yeah, that's true...but you see, raindeers are common even further up north, they belong to the "samis" (remember the viking-thread?), I'm actually too far south (!)
I suddenly remembered one more elk-story, this is true! I crashed in a alk 2 years ago, while driving car. It wasn't my car...it was my family's, a big BMW. And I stood on the brake, so I was in a very slow speed when I hit it. But it fell on the motor-hood, and had it's face towards my window! And then it slid backwards, to the road, and ran off. A really crazy experience! It's still scratches on their car.

Honestly, even though I'm an anonynous internet-writer, I'm honest.

Moose is (I believe) a shorter and smaller kind of elk. Elk is the big version...but I believe they're even bigger in Canada, though. Everything is bigger there, even the trees.
You live in Berlin? Is Neukoln a part of Berlin? I thought Bowie and Iggy Pop used to hang out there in 76...
