Mick's writing on ABB - opinions
Posted by: JJFlash2010 ()

Hi all, long time Stones fan and reader of the board...

Don't want to start off complaining, but felt like mentioning that ABB kind of fell short for me, as far as being a solid Stones album, from start to finish. I like the energy and the immediacy of the playing, but lyrically it's only so-so.

The good ones, IMHO: "Rough Justice", "Rain Fall Down", "Oh No, Not You Again", "Sweet Neocon" (was glad at the time somebody said something about Bush Co. in a song), "Back Of My Hand" is good, and "Look What The Cat Dragged In" is a fun one. The rest is kind of forgettable.

Sorry, I know anyone can complain on these net message boards! And I'm a big fan of Jagger and The Stones, just hope he's maybe less personal with his lyrics, if they actually are working on a new record, and hopefully he gets into some more rocking stuff.

I don't want to hear him singing about sitting around on the couch being a grouch, or singing about relationships or his feelings, really... Maybe that's it, maybe he was too vulnerable on ABB to my ears.... Anyway, hope the Stones record and tour again, Rock On!

I don't mind the lyrics on a hole, although I could have done without Biggest Mistake.

I'm glad there's someone else out there who doesn't mind Sweet Neo Con, though.

His harp playing is great on Neocon. IMHO, his lyrics are over-thought on ABB, his words are too calculated, and move less fluidly with the music than a lot of their other stuff.

The music and words feel like two different things.

But there again, maybe I just felt like complaining about something on the internet tonight...

OK, so I don't want to just complain about Mick Jagger on this Stones site!

Mick Jagger taught so many of us how to move and be unashamed with his music. He's one man and a microphone, and he doesn't give a f@#k. Him and Keith ARE Rock N' Roll. Freedom comes to mind when I think of Mick Jagger. He hasn't ever stopped, and nothing's kept him down. Rock on! I just didn't really care for the last record, no biggie!

You look like a leper dressed like Sergeant Pepper and You can lose the love of your lifetime in a single roll are the best lines he has ever written.

Actually, I'd add It Won't Take Long to the list of good ones, maybe I should give the whole thing another listen....

Hang the liberal laminate on his neck. And if Mick wants to go at "Bush Co" maybe he could do it in a "song" next time!! Cheers!

I actually like Biggest Mistake a lot. One of my favorites! Great melody.
It does not feel like a Jagger solo leftover or something. It sounds like the Stones.

Horrible horrible horrible lyrics .... sorry folks.

"One time you were my baby chicken" !!! WTF ... ??? Take the day off will ya Mick, and get some sleep.

ROUGH JUSTICE

One time you were my baby chicken
Now you've grown into a fox
And once upon a time I was your little rooster
Am I just one of your cocks?

It's rough justice, oh yeah!
You're gonna have to trust me
It's rough justice
But you know I never break your heart

So put your lips to my hips baby
And tell me what's on your mind
I know you still got that animal attraction for me
It's been a long, long time

It's rough justice, oh yeah!
We never thought it dusty
It's rough justice
But you know I never break your heart

You're feeling loose n' lusty
So if you really want me
It's rough justice
And you know I never break your heart

It's rough justice, oh yeah!
You think you really suss me?
It's rough justice
But you know I never break your heart

First time I saw baby
You were springin' like a young gazelle
And next thing I know, we're way down the road
And you're flying like a bat outta hell

It's rough justice, oh yeah!
You're attitude's disgusting
You're gonna have to trust me
But you know I never break your heart

I give you my possession
Don't want no opposition
It's rough justice
But you know I never break your heart

Ohh!! Come on!!!! Oh yeah!!!!
Whooo!! Come one baby, now....now... now...

I think one of his best writing is in Wandering Spirit.

Disagree! Sounds like grown up pop music crafted by Mick Jagger. But I could be wrong...

Rough Justice is a great rocker. Similar to You Got Me Rockin'... only stronger. Don't take lyrics like these too seriously. Jagger is just playin' silly. Just like in Sex Drive and many others.

If he wants to, he can write fantastic lyrics. Wandering Spirit is a good example of that, like the posters above pointed out.

The trouble is that there are several very noticeable places on ABB where the awful truth is that Mick's lyrics are awful bad (the jello moon on Oh No Not You Again, the opening verse of Rough Justice etc.) - and everybody remembers those and quotes them endlessly, while the much better lyrics of most of ABB get overlooked.

By the way, Mick has spent a lot of songs singing about his feelings - but maybe the feelings on ABB are different, and that's what isn't so much fun?

Mick's lyrical muse begins at boffing fashion models and ends at going dancing. Writing words to songs places a distant second behind the art of the tour deal.

Okay I don't like the Rough Justice lyrics, but I think the Lyrics on 'Laugh I nearly died' are great, even as the song. Very underestimated.

That's funny...people usually complain that his lyrics aren't personal enough. I love hearing his sensitive side, but that may be a difference between men and women lol

Surely Rough Justice is tongue in cheek. A great rocker, hilarious lyrics - what's wrong with that? Does everything have to be JJF and SFTD? I still find She Saw Me Coming to be brilliantly funny and funky and one of the better tracks on the album.

The worst? Well, ha ha, Rain Falls Down, Sweet Neo Con and Streets Of Love. All downright awful.

>Mick's writing on ABB leaves something to be desired

Some it was indeed juvenile and trite, and some if it was refreshingly mature. Very few half measures.

At least Mick brought his writing muse to the studio. Last time I looked, he was supposed to be part of a two-man songwriting team.

I also have a sort of affection to it. I can hear it musically and thematically as a distant cousin to "Sittin' On A Fence".

In fact, it is one of the very few songs in A BIGGER BANG that I find sound like a Rolling Stones song that doesn't sound like sounding like a Rolling Stones song...

biggest mistake, like almost all of the songs on this album, is rendered all but unlistenable by mick's vocals - i really can't listen to this guy sing without cringing most of the time. even moreso than the worsening of the guitarists' chops, mick's over-mannered vocal personas have really taken a dire toll on this band....
