They are? What gave you that idea? The only people mourning are the tabloid editors because it'll cost them more money to send a few hacks out to LA on a permanent basis to stalk them on a daily basis.

the move has nothing to do with the game becoming 'popular' in America. Its a meal ticket for him at the end of his career, plus he has a coaching school out there. Plus, as its LA, it'll give his tedious idiot of a wife another few years in the public eye long after her media shelf life should have expired and allow to harbour more ill-founded illusions that she might be able to resurrect her own career.

Beckham was a half-decent crosser of a ball and a fairly accurate free-kick specialist, and that is about the sume total of his abilities.

It's ironic how so many of his shirt sales are from those kids in parts of the world where they will never have never actually seen him play, or had the misfortune to hear his wife sing.

It's the celebrity culture gone mad. LA deserves them both.

I hope they rot there.

They play soccer here in the U.S.? I don't think many people will care.

English football is doomed. Our national team is an underachieving, overpaid joke.

Anyway, Beckham's done the right thing. His career's fading and LA are paying him $128 million (that's roughly $1 million A WEEK).

You obviously are not a Man U supporter.

Frankly, better Beckham than Rooney and his chav girlfriend. At least Victoria used to sort of do something before she became a poster girl for anorexics.

You're spot on Nikolai!! I support the team whose reserves got taken to the cleaners by Arsenal's reserves the other night!

Mind you, I still hope Beckham rots in hell. The kind of money he is being offered (to play in America!) is utterly obscene. His weekly wage could feed a continent.

And I can't help but ask what Best, Law and Charlton would be worth these days? Now those guys could really play.

I'm sure soccer will have an increase in popularity similar to when Pele played with the NY Cosmos. The reality of it though, is that with football, baseball, basketball and hockey, North American's don't find soccer to be exciting. I don't want to watch a 90 minute match end in a 0-0 tie. There's lots of kids who play soccer at the minor league level and it's fun to play but (in my opinion), not very exciting to watch.

Well, yes, they were the real deal. They'd be worth billions.

Never got why Americans called their NFL football football, when it's basically rugby via Robocop.

I am happy twice, why?
because who is Beckham, anyone who loves and like football, in this case during in Real Madrid, NADA!!! he was more on magazines and paparazzi than playing, besides that after 4 years he doesnt know STILL how to speak spanish, that is very unrespectful for all Spaniards supporters. I live in Spain now, I am spaniard and he havent done anything for Real Madrid, jusr sell shirts, give me break!!
I am glad in another way because I used to live in Los Angeles for 6 years and I Know soccer is very important for sportsmen/women, just see women champion of the world anytime, and many other examples. The big problem in USA are the big Leagues, as baseball and American Football, they dont let soccer make bigger and bigger and they control all the resources as publicity and media, and they create something as a joke called MLS.
Beckham is just a puppet with a ESTUPIDA wife which cares money , Malibu and dollars, he is gonna make more money there than Manchester and Real Madrid, I lived in Los Angeles and I know it, its a shame!!

Yeah just like Pele and a couple other soccer legends who came over and finished their careers here. Like back in the days of the NASL and the New York Cosmos. Soccer will never be anything but a fringe sport in the USA.

frankly, although i'm an argentina supporter in the world cup..i am american and was born in the US (my family is from argentina and i'm also from there), well.. i'm getting SICK of all these ridiculous statements..i happen to pick this one but there are plenty..its like people from the rest of the world love to bash US soccer.... hey england supporters YOUR TEAM stunk in the last world cup.. no team played less attractive soccer.. you haven't won jack squat in 40 years so chill eh..

this bit about soccer not being anything but a fringe sport...

surely you don't refer to people actually playing soccer do you? cause its the number one youth sport in the country... more kids play soccer than anything else.. more kids play soccer in teh US than in england or anywhere else..

perhaps then you are simply referring to sports people get drunk on sundays to drink beer to like american football.. who plays that??? NO ONE but people get drunk to those tedious 4 hours games..

i think beckham is on the downcurve of his career but even i who think he's been extremely overrated all his career (yes by you england supporters who had him as your captain)..well even i am a little excited he's coming to the MLS...and why not?

Look man, I know there are a million kids playing soccer. Good for them. If they enjoy it, no problem. But does that translate into commercial success? NO. Yes the MSL is the best soccer league in the US yet. I even used to watch a few games on tv when there was a team in San Jose. But the fact remains,in terms of commercial and international sucess, american soccer is nowhwere near in popularity as the rest of the world. Whatever you think of American Football, it is and always will be, the most popular sport in the United States.

ah so all we care about is commercial success or success at the world cup..

well i think the US will eventually do well at a world cup....

there's so many people playing soccer, so much money , and so many Latinos.

i just resent the way the postings are going here.... it basically becomes an America sucks thing..

and thats lame..

only 32 countries made the world cup... and in 2002 the US made it to the quarters i think... so everybody relax a bit

and while i agree american football will always be the most popular sport to WATCH on TV so what?

whats the actual point..something about beckham signs in the US but who cares cause the US soccer sucks?

thats lame... its good news for the US soccer..think about it.. he's coming from real madrid which is only one of the world's top five clubs..so..

Hello. You don't see all the kids playing soccer now turning into quality pro players. Even the best americans like Eric Wynalda and Kasey Keller play overseas rather than in the USA. On the other hand the US has a history of welcoming fading world soccer stars. Do you think that if Beckham could play at all, that anybody would let him out of Europe? That's not anti-american. It's fact.

i don't think you know anything about soccer given that wynalda retired about FIFTEEN years ago!

the posts on this thread are silly... the US CAN play soccer.its not one of the world's best but its not one of the world's worse either.. or did you not watch Italy - US in this World Cup

1-1

FACT..

whether you like it or not its tough for teams to beat the US

heck i remember watching argentina-US friendly 10 years ago or so here in dc and the US won 1-0
