OT: John Frusciante

I HATE the Chili Peppers (or, more properly, I hate Anthony Kiedis); but I do love John Frusciante's first solo album (Niandra Lades & Usually Just A T-Shirt) more than virtually any other piece of recorded music of the past 20 years.

This absolutely incredible documentary was shot while he was working on that album and is worth your time to watch.

Aah, junkies.

I LOVE the Chili Peppers, and think that John Frusciante is one of the all time greats.

I don't quite know how anyone could hate the Peppers (or Kiedis) especially if they've listened to any of the following albums: Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Stadium Arcadium, Californication, or By The Way.

Not only are they some of the best albums to come out in the past 15 years, but Kiedis is one of the best frontmen of all time. Just behind Jagger, of course.

I just don't see the point of the Chili Peppers, if I want to listen to funk, I'll listen to real funk. Lord knows, there's certainly enough of the real stuff.

As far as Kiedis goes, I just can't help myself. Every time I hear the man speak or see him engaged in his antics, I want to pistol-whip him until he ...just...stops. Also, I think he is pure crap as a singer and lyricist.

One thing though, Flea & (obviously) Frusciante can REALLY play. No doubt about that. "BloodSugar..." is a pretty good album, but I've never heard anything else by them (and I've heard essentially everything they've ever done) that even approaches pretty good.

To each his own, though.

Was at the 18th show. Awesome. Loved hearing the new stuff: Snow, Wet Sand, etc . . .

Saw them at Earls Court this year and in Hyde Park back in 2004. Brilliant both times.

On that basis you could say (not that I would) that there's no point in the Rolling Stones when you canm listen to Chuck Berry!!!!

Exactly - that's why I NEVER listen to the early Rolling Stones albums.

What's the point?
When they first came out, it was many people's first exposure to CHuck (& other legendary artists they covered). At this point, Chuck Berry's music is pretty well-known and fairly easy to get a hold of, so there's really no reason to listen to that stuff either.

I like the Rolling Stones when they start to sound like the Rolling Stones, when they start to do their own thing, but I think it's just as pointless to listen to the Stones doing Chuck Berry as it is to listen to the Red Hot Chili Peppers approximation of funk.

EDIT:
Y'know what really pisses me off about Kiedis? The endless Iggy rip-off he's been doing for the past few years. Atrocious.

You cannot be serious! The Stones studio rendition of Bye Bye Johnny absoloutley pissess over the original. As does You Can't Catch Me and (although Berry did'nt write it) Down The Road Apeice. Bloody hell.

The flag is the cover of There's A Riot Going On.

If you don't recognize an absolute landmark recording (a funk/soul recording no less), you really should run a check before you try and defend the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I must disagree with you on those, but you y'know what? The Stones version of Let It Rock may actually be better than Chuck's.

We'll agree to disagree!

I love Chuck Berry, but the only song of his which I think no one could do better is Johnny B Goode. That tune is uniquely his. Its the one Berry number hat everyone ascosiates him with.

Frusciante rules I love him ! He is such an spontaneous inspired musician. I got into his solo stuff, it's full of diamonds, I love it!

To be honest the sudo whiteman rap thing bugs the shit out of me! Yes, they are good musicians, and have some interesting aspects, but I wouldn't buy any of their stuff.

Frusciante is really good, but I can't stand any of the albums you listed (except for parts of Blood Sugar). Love the debut & Freaky Styley, Uplift Mofo is ok but didn't really do it for me, and Mother's Milk is my favorite of theirs, but it all went downhill from there, in my opinion. They lost all their style and became boring, sentimental, cliched, and played out. The worst offender is Kiedis - his lyrics are awful and as soon as he tried to really sing, YIKES.

Oddly enough, I really liked his autobiography.

I think the Chili Peppers are a very talented band, and much better with Frusciante as guitarist. They have stood the test of time and are one of the few working bands that have been around for many years, but are still turning out quality new music.

Cosmo the minute I saw the video link I knew what it was going to be. That footage always cracks me up.JF is out there. He did come back..
As much as I like him with the Peppers I have never listened to any of his solo stuff. I mean is it like that crap he does in the interview?

I would add the VERY GREATEST CHILI PEPPERS CD's of ALL TIME:

MY OWN self-recorded "Greatest Hits" CDS, lolololol.

I hope these CD's never wear out because I accidently deleted every &^%$# track when Bear Share went to a pay service sad smiley

This band must have WAY over 35 Knock-Out all-time azz-kicking hall-of-fame great songs... I would caution people who aren't into this band that 3 of their albums are fairly "complete" in terms of alot of great songs (Californication, By the Way, and Stadium Arcadium)... their other albums (MoFo Party, ONe Hot Minute, etc. etc.) each have 2 or 3 killer songs but the entire albums aren't great... that's why you have to wade through them and pull out the gems and thats probably why you don't like them.

And I got tix for their Chicago gig in February, Cannot wait!!

Oh yeah, and JF is the genuine article. He's one of a handful of "child prodigies" who was able to join a world-class band at a very young age... let me see, another guitarist comes to mind there too... Mick Taylor smiling smiley although their styles are very different.

Even if you HATE the RHCP you will love their live concerts. They kick ass, blow the roof off, have rabid screaming fans with plenty of great lookin' babes in the audience and "stuff" passin' down the aisle. If you don't like that, you're not a Stones fan either.

He really does - it's amazing how he is fairly coherent in his way.

And yes, Chelsea, his solo work (at least the first 2 albums) is like the stuff you hear in that video. Not something I'd put on at a party, but I really dig it.

Is it true that John Frusciante is so out of touch that he was'nt aware of 9/11? According to a Q magazine interview a few years ago this is true!

Yeah, I love that tack too, Beely.

Apparently, I had been deluding myself all of these years, thinking I was a Rolling Stones fan. Alas, I was wrong.

I need a minute to let the news sink in.

Oh yes, thats right. I knew it was something like that. Oh well, there is'nt really much difference though, is there? Especially considering that people in the bloody North Pole probably knew!
