Keith and Reggae
Posted by: calipachangero ()

After listening last night to Keith singing "The harder they come" I really got the impression, that he is or was a lot into reggae.

Beside the live performance, the variety of muscic styles the stones tried out is maybe the most important thing for me that made me become a fan.

My question is: Are there any reggae songs, the stones wrote by themselfs?
(I mean beside the early version of start me up)

Thanks

I Got a Letter (a 74 demo you can find on a lot of bootlegs) is said to be Keith's first reggae number.

The reggae songs they've written to my knowledge are:

Luxury
I Got A Letter
Munich Reggae
Send It To Me
Feel On Baby
You Don't Have To Mean It

All of which are great songs.

Keith plays reggae with a real authenticity. It suits his style and feel perfectly.

I think these songs more or less were influenced by caribbean music:

Sweet Black Angel
Luxury
Jah Is Not Dead
Münich Reggae
Cherry Oh Baby
Hey Negrita
Crackin' Up (Love You Live version)
Everything Is Turning To Gold
Don't Look Back
The Harder They Come
Send It To Me
Indian Girl
Start Me Up (early reggae version)
Feel On Baby
Too Rude
Sweethearts Together
Moon Is Up
You Don't Have To Mean It

More???

Maybe "Thief in the Night" and "Just Wanna See His Face" also have some caribbean touch?

hm. i wouldn't bunch the Central/South American-flavour tracks in with the reggae, but:

>> More??? <<

yeah: She Never Listen to Me
which is starting to seem strangely self-referential. great track :E

<Indian Girl>
<Sweethearts Together>

I think we'll stay in Mexico (or on the border) for those tunes.

Charlie once said that Keith was listening to The Harder They Come album every single day during the 81/82 tour! That's why Charlie called it the Harder They Come tour.

I always have the impression that reggea did not suit the stones rhythm section too much.

Keith is ok, of course. And so is ron. Jah is not dead proves that mick can sing great.

But the backbone is somehow weak.

Cherry o baby is slightly flat

Max Romeo pumps it up a little send it to me

Not surprising that the stones best effort arrives only with feel on baby from undercover, and it had shakespeare on bass and bunbar helping on drums, plus half a dozen percussionists

Even too rude sounds good, with ronnie playing bass and drums

True Charlie is back on you don't have to mean it (one of the greatest numbers of B2cool smiley but he had been working a lot with keltner at the time and DJ's bass lines are killers!
