The Stones are simply a greater band. They have released better albums and defined what rock and roll is all about. They simply made better music in their prime than U2 in theirs. On the other hand one shouldn't underestimate U2 as a band despite Bono being the most obnoxious person in the entire universe. The guys have cut some of the best music of all time, captured on albums such as Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.Their body of work might not be among the greatest ones but they certainly can put on a wonderful show, not only visually but musically as well. Now there is a good number of artists that I rate higher than U2 but the fact is that seeing U2 was almost as great an experience as seeing The Stones.I never believed that I'd ever say that but that's just how I feel about that band and I can't deny it.They simply have smth special going despite not being as talented and creative as some of their predecessors from the sixties and seventies.

the stones began at the moment when the music industry just started.U2 in the beginning in the 80,s.Record companies told them after one hit ,you can make an album but keep that same sound.and in december 2009 it,s still the same sound.U2 can,t play another styles like the the stones do.No blues,no country,no reggae etc.except from a little help(BBKIng) in my opinion you can,t compare Stones/U2.

the gimme shelter version in the Rock and roll off fame makes it clear.

Apples & Oranges man. Different bands, different eras, different sounds...

I will say though that U2 is not as musically myopic as how charles describes them. Same sound?? Really?? They have very different eras in their catalouge. I do really like how the band is the same 4 guys from the beginning, since they were all in high school.

Bono? Preachy? Yeah - 20 years ago. The fun of the whole ZOOTV tour was what made me a fan again after Rattle & Hum. In '88 I was sick of u2. '91 witness the most successful sound change and image reboot since.... anything before my time (Sgt. Pepper's comes to mind).

The biggest difference is that U2 seems to have creatively peaked in 2000 with All That You Can't Leave Behind. The Stones peak was almost 20 years before that. Both are nostalgic acts to some extent nowadays, one just less dusty than the other.

U2 in their prime comes nowhere near the Stones in their prime though, for me. Hmmm, this thread is making me think about this more than I'd thought it would!

Stones definitely, but it's not fair to compare these two bands - different music, different period. With all those other comperements (beatles, The Who, Zeppelin...) we don't need this one.

Alas, it has to be U2, if only for the fact that they have a guitarist (of sorts) who ISN'T an alcoholic.

If I remember right, a Creem article on Martin Mull was titled "Like Mick Jagger, Only Funny "

Rock'n'Roll needs U2 like a moose needs a hatrack.

Re: stones--vs u2

U2, at best, are an "OK" pop band. The Stones on the other hand are the world's
greatest Rock-N-Roll band!

Bring on the 2010 Stones tour!!

if i think of u2 in the last year, i see them closer to some pop music like madonna, robbie williams etc etc...
today stones and u2 belong to different categories, very difficult to compare
