Yeah, but if its even a patch on the Dylan DVD it'll be worth waiting for.

Yep, and I read between the lines that we can forget a complete Beacon show on DVD - it's more likely that they throw in just a couple of songs as it is a "Documentary" Gimme Shelter-style.

Paramount rolls with Scorsese on Stones movie

[today.reuters.com]

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Paramount Pictures has bought North American rights to the Rolling Stones documentary that Martin Scorsese is currently shooting in New York.

The studio plans to release the as-yet-untitled film near the end of 2007.

Scorsese started filming Sunday during the Stones' performance at President Clinton's celebrity-packed birthday bash at the Beacon Theater, and will also film at the Manhattan venue Wednesday night.

The film will focus on the two concerts from the group's current "A Bigger Bang" tour as well as historical and contemporary behind-the-scenes footage and interviews. A recent concert in Austin, Texas, was also filmed.

Veteran documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles, who captured the Stones in the infamous 1970 movie "Gimme Shelter," also will provide backstage coverage.

Scorsese is on a roll. His Boston gangster film "The Departed" -- featuring two Stones songs -- has scored with critics and audiences. It is expected to be not only his highest-grossing film to date but also an Oscar contender.

He previously directed the acclaimed music documentaries -- 1978's "The Last Waltz," featuring the Band, and 2005's "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan."

The Stones film is being financed by Hollywood producer Steve Bing, a friend of the band's, and by Michael Cohl, the Stones' tour promoter since 1989.

The concert promoter is financing the concert film. While that shouldnt be surprising, I would think its a first, at least on this scale.

Conflict of interest?

Scorsese's films always come out in the fall, with october the usual month for his releases. This also comfirms that as I expected, he is making a theatrical movie, not a dvd as many felt. Of course like all movies it will eventually be released on dvd.

It's the Stones version of the Last Waltz. Scorcese knows it and they know it. It's a little scary.

It'd be nice if you were kidding with that statement.

I'd really hate to see this go to Paramount, unless Paramount Vantage is handling it. I would really want this to be a film with a smaller production company feel to it - if bigwigs get their hands on this it may become something else.

the two events are also filmed 30 years apart to the month.

If its any consolation, some 7 years after filming it, The Band reformed. That said, it was without their guitarist and spiritual driving force....

Similar to how Paramount handled U2 Rattle And Hum in 1988. They took an independent film and tried to turn it into a big event release, which in turn lead to a lot of backlash directed towards the band.

I don't think that we can forget anything quite yet.

While the theatrical release may not be a complete Beacon show, I wouldn't be surprised if the dvd version was; it's one thing to get folks into the theatre and something else to get them to but the dvd. If you give them the "bonus" disc of a complete concert (with minimal extra cost to the producers), you greatly increase the chances of selling the dvd and increasing the price that people will pay.

This is exactly what they did with the Concert For George dvd. It is a 2 disc dvd that contains 2 different versions of the concert. ON one disc is the edited version that was released theatrically in some cities prior to the dvd release. This version was shorter, lost some songs, but included some interview footage. The other dvd was the full complete concert, other than at least 1 minor change from a comment that Clapton made during the show.

Wonder what "historical" footage they will let Martin get his hands on??

Maybe Gimme Shelter from that 1972 Philly concert?? I hear there is Video of that show in their vaults!!!!

In 25x5 twenty five years in 2 hours. So would this mean 43 years in 2 hours. The Dylan was excellant but that was 3 years really.

U2 Rattle & Hum the movie - I think Paul McGuinness (U2 Manager) helped finance it again with Paramount Pictures buying the rights

I hope you're right. I could care less about the documentary, I just want to see the whole show, uncut.
