It seems U2 is just Jagger's backing band.

That sounds terrible. U2 (esp. The Edge) ruined that song for me.

Hé hé .winking smiley

I definitely don't like The Edge guitar sound ,too many pedal effects ? What do you think ,Riffbuk ?

The hubbub of the audience when Mick gets on stage gives me goosebumps.

I think The Edge had guts to try something new with the song. But imo, he did only partly succeed. Actually, the least suitable was the boogie riffing before the verses. Sounded kinda strange...

Like he was playing the same note twice ? Or "reverb " ??

Song has no drive and Fergie can't hit the high notes. Mick is great though. He's such a trip.

It's obvious now that they ruined the song, but Mick, I can't believe he's 66!
Thanks Riffbuk for the post!

That performance reminds me on something Gene Simmons said once: 'Let's show all the little boys how the big boys do it!'

Probably the most interesting vocal treatment Mick has given the song in years.

I know this sounds goofy and some people will roll their eyes, but I am very intrigued with the idea of Taylor playing with U2. For me there is something missing from that band's music and I think Taylor could fill it.

bonos rhythm guitar is actually moderately acceptable...at least compared to the rest of the band.

I thought that was great. Kudos to Edge for doing his own thing with the song.

Thank you U2. You made me realise how ABSOLUTELY priceless Keith and Charlie are. Thank you.

P.S. Edge sounds like a drunken Hank B. Marvin. That is as far from rock 'n' roll as you can get.

I think it's a nice take on the song. Except for the boogie riffin. Doesn't suit the mood off the song. Fergie's doing a fine job. Mick's the genuine article.

Actually one of the best versions since '75. And I am glad I wasn't alone in thinking the synth was horrible -they took him out of the mix.

This is the reason why they didn't try to do an exact copy of the original version of Gimme Shelter.

At the very beginning of U2's career (before they'd made any records) they would try to cover songs like every other new band does and realized they sucked at it. This led them to their own "unique" sound which was a major part of their early success. It was also the only music they could play! They played within themselves and rarely has any other band sounded like them. Whenever they tried to play other styles (blues, etc. around the time of the Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum) it was only semi decent and somewhat interesting but never as good as songs in their own style.

Covers are a similar issue with them. There is a bootleg or 2 out there of attempts at covers during live shows throughout their career. Most are just one-offs or done at times when there was a malfunction on stage. Only about 25% of them are really good. I do like their studio cover of Paint It, Black though.

For any cover band out there, I'll bet Gimme Shelter isn't the easiest Stones song to cover anyway. At least so it has the same impact as the original. I don't even think the Stones have done it very well live since the 1969 tour. It doesn't have a simple rhythm and there's an underlying groove that needs to match what the drummer is playing. I've rarely even heard the opening guitar line sound as great as the original, and that's the key to the whole song!

Thanks for the video Riffbukthumbs up
Nice job as always!

I don't like this version, and i have to say that U2 ruined this song
and also in an other way ruined the performance of Mick, because this version is so awful that i don't want to watch it again even if Mick sing on it.
IMO the worst version i've ever heard!

Thanks for the HQ video. Just watched it twice and I must say it's a great effort by U2 and Fergie. Of course we knew Mick would be great. I get a rush when he hit the stage. As far as U2's version goes I think it has a nice trippy sound and I love when Bono does a hard riff, probably his finest moment on the guitar. I hope this video is included in that Rock N' Roll HOF box set they're releasing.

U2 vs Stones - One need look no further than this video. Bono can not touch Mick. Mick has stage presence all over him.

I don't see it as U2 vs Stones, I'd rather view it as U2 AND Stones.

The way Sir Mick Jagger enters the stage gives me goosebumbs over and over again.
What a PERFORMER. Awesome...

The song surely grows on you. I think it's very cool U2 made it a bit there own by playing it in there own style. Like it or hate it you got to admire that. Like Jagger said on the biggest bang just before Get up, Stand up, "You don't want to do a complete copy, you have to make it a bit your own".

Cheers,
Wuudy

I love this version. Mick and Bono play off each other nicely. With practice, they could really make music together.
