OT: Best albums of 2009
Posted by: mr edward ()

The year is drawing to an end and lots of interesting albums were released. What are your favourites? Wich are the albums you still will be listening to in, say, 5 years?

Here are my choices:

Pearl Jam - Backspacer
Black Crowes - Before The Frost...
Derek Trucks Band - Already Free
Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures
Bob Dylan - Together Through Life
Monsters of Folk - MOnsters of Folk

The Dead Wheather, Eels, The Artic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and Dan Auerback (Black Keys) all released good albums, but I wonder if they wil get a regular spin in a couple of months.

What are your choices? Did I overlook a great album?

Let's hear it!

Wilco yes, correct. That was a good album. Never understood the appeal of the 21 th century MTV version of Greenday though.

Have only bought very few new releases this year, but Allen Toussaint's The Bright Mississippi and Booker T's Potato Hole have both turned out to be keepers

As for archive releases/re-issues; Sly & The Family Stone's Woodstock set have been on heavy rotation since I got it
The release of early King Tubby dubs of Clancy Eccless material on Sound System International proved to be something very special
... have yet to pick up the latest installment of the Doors BMA series

THE ETERNAL by Sonic Youth is another contender. (Though I sense I don't share the "classic rock" tendency of some other posters.)

these have all been mentioned before, but I'm afraid at least the Crowes won't be featured too high on your MOJOs and Uncuts year end lists, so...

Tom Petty Live boxset
The Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound - When Sweet Sleep Returned (amazing psych rock band from San Fran)
School Of Seven Bells - Alpinism (dreamy indie electronic pop)

By the way, School Of Seven Bells has one of the foxiest girls singers out there right now. Her name is Alejandra Deheza. Pictured in front below.

Fleet Foxes is great, best album I have heard in a long time !

Stooges - You Want My Name box must be the most surprising and best reissue

Portugal The Man record is also not bad.

Also Dead Weather,Reigning Sound, The Heavy, there is lots of good music around it just seems to get harder to dig it up smiling smiley

Sorry Stooges set is not a reissue, most of the material has never been released before, and yes the Dinosaur Jr album Farm is also great, they havent lost it at all.
