Ev`ibody rave `bout "Exile", but if "Sticky" is nearly as good, ..

Many think "Exile" is the peak of their career, but at polls, almost nearly as many would say "Sticky Fingers". However, no ravin` about that, in equal measure, at least at this board...

The reason is EOMS remains the favorite.

Personally, I prefer Let It Bleed. LIB must be the favorite of a lot of others on here as well, considering all the praise the official LP from that tour (i.e., Ya-Yas) gets.

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.

On average, the songs on Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers are better. Exile just has a mood and a spirit that is better. There are more songs on Exile, more variety, it's an album you can really immerse yourself into. And even with more songs the quality level stays the same.

Let It Bleed------------Beggars Banguet
Sticky Fingers-------------Exile On Main Street
and number 3 Aftermath

I don't think Exile is on number one here....we did some pols in the past

Every single Stones album is great, in fact fantastic. Bleed, Sticky, Exile, GHS. Even BTB and ABB. And by the way, what album have they performed every single song from live?

Out of Our Heads (US)
Let It Bleed (if you count the snippet of Country Honk at Knebworth)
Sticky Fingers
Black & Blue
Some Girls

They have performed every song live from Some Girls. I've seen 9 songs, all but Lies.

I'll gladly accept - thanks!
Makes me wonder; which songs from the UK version of Out Of Our Heads hasn't been performed live?
I remember a person posting on IORR, that he did see Rolling Stones in Australia 1965 or 1966 - who swore that they did play one track of "Out Of Our Heads", which was previously known to be in the never-played-live-category
Can't recall which song it was though

Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers & Beggars Banquet are DEFINITELY masterpieces...
....but Ya-Ya's & Exile are getting the attention right now because of the
new DELUXE Editions (at least that's why I've been featuring them in my threads).

IORR............but I like it!

I love the foursome from there era best:
Beggars, LIB, Exile & Sticky. If I had to pick one, I usually go w/ Exile

Thanks with Sssoul - didn't know that
But it wasn't "Gotta Get Away", which this person did see performed live......maybe "Empty Heart"...? - can't find the post when searching....nevermind

Time for Gotta Get Away to be included in the future setlist, then !
Not too many chords involved in that one

I think "Sticky Fingers" stands out in their album catalogue. It is very consistent, has strong melodies, and is without songs that mainly deal with groove. It is strange to think of the fact that some of the songs on "Exile" were made during the same time.

The great thing is that these albums are so different but both are wonderful. SF has songs of various styles, some of the best Stonessongs ever (CYHMK, Bitch, SM, MM...), Exile is rougher, it has an aura. Incredible that the golden era albums were released within four years.

-And why do they record albums so loud these days? When I play ABB, I just have to turn the volume button just a tiny little bit. This weekend I bought the single "Lyckliga gatan" by Anna Lena Løfgren, recorded in 1967. I had to turn the volume button past the "9 o`clock" position, which is very seldom neccesary. That said, I`m no typical rocknroller, if you shouldn`t have guessed...

Exile works best as an ALBUM - mood and feel. Sticky might have better individual songs and more hits. Let It Bleed has fantastic songs but suffers some from its overly-clean sound. I can't listen to the studio version of Midnight Rambler after hearing the Ya-Ya's version.

Something about SF always bothered me. After many, many years, it dawned on me. Try this. The album makes much more sense to me in this order. It takes you on a journey, mood and tempo-wise.

Brown Sugar
Bitch
CYHMK
Sway
Dead Flowers
Wild Horses
I Got The Blues
You Gotta Move
Sister Morph
Moonlight Mile

I don´t agree with this.

Of course the "golden era" with Beggars,Bleed;Sticky and Exile is ranking on top
for me ,absolutely untouchable, not to forget the fantastic Ya Ya´s.

Although Exile is my favourite album I regularly doubt it listening to one of the above mentioned only to end up with my same old conclusion.

The importance of all others are varying, with Some Girls holding a manifested
rank in my top 5 Stones studio albums.

The most others consists mainly of fabulous tracks with a weaker ( or filler here and there ) including Undercover.

After that I can´t speak anymore of fantastic Stones albums but of great great songs structured in a certain format, backed up with tracks which are sometimes
very weak, forgettable or in worst cases embarrassing.

And because of that it´s my favourite band,it´s the human touch...

I've never been able to listen to Exile from beginning to end.

Sticky is their best TUNES album.

If a friend asks which album to recommend i always go for Sticky, no real duds on it.

My love goes to Sticky Fingers!

Exile is a real cool album, but it's too diverse and crowded with lesser songs. I have to skip too many songs to get a great vibe. But it's still a great album in their catalogue.

Sticky gets my full love, because it was one my first full RS album (on cassette first). Always loved to play Can't you Hear Me Knocking? and I Got Blues. And later on Sway. I still can't get enough of that album. It's not too long. The songs are just great. And as a guitarplayer I love to play Sway, Can't you Hear Me Knocking?, Bitch, Wild Horses. Feeling like Mick Taylor there. hahaha

Interesting take...we have a schism here between those who love Exile for the whole gritty, grungy mess it is (I am in that group), and those who think it doesn't have enough great songs or (gasp) too many songs. Exile is more than the sum of its parts. Each of the four sides has a mood (a little lost on CD). Exile requires patience and involvement from the listener. It does not yield its treasures easily. And as a guitarist I love playing the songs on it every bit as much as those from SF - even more.

Good point, 71Tele! I do understand your point there.

But I have to admit... I had to get used to some of the songs on Exile. I had to LEARN to listen and to love some of the songs. For example: Tumbling Dice, Hip Shake, Rip This Joint. I hated those songs first, but now I do love to them. I think it's a matter of patience and a matter of learning indeed.
