Star star ist the only song which I like better in a 1975/76 recording than on the 1973 recordings. The Paris version is very good.

However, I changed my mind a bit when I heard the Hamburg 1973 version on THE STARS IN THE SKY THEY NEVER LIE.

And Seattle 1978 is also great.

Don't know the FOUR FLICKS versio, anyway.

During 1975/76 tours they did really dirty and nasty versions of Star Star. Also, in 1978 it was good enough.
The 2003 versions are too smooth and clean - no dirtyness any longer, just rock and roll.

I like 78 best by a mile. Fits the punky spirit just great.

I don't like the 2003 Twickenham version, at all. A lot of that has to do with Keith's guitar choice. He uses that Gibson guitar and blues-style of playing that doesn't fit the song well; the versions where he plays it with a Fender, in the more rock n roll style, are way better.

No one has mentioned the 97/98 versions of the "web choice" era.

The reason because the new versions of this song are way under the older ones is not other than the bass playing, rather than Keith's guitar choice, IMHO.

Yes.

Daryl isn't good for songs like Star Star. Leave that to Bill.

His guitar choice is fine. It's a typical Chuck Berry style song man, he should have always been using that Gibson!!
Anyway, my favourite is '75.

Go for the Cleveland 78 one.

<not other than the bass playing, rather than Keith's guitar choice>

Well, you got a point there, but Keith's guitar on songs like Star Star, Whip and Neighbours is just not up to par anymore. I heard the version of Under My Thumb from Vienna, and that was promising stuff. I hope he'll lift those other songs as well (if we get to hear them on this tour).

Are you guys thinking clearly...the definitive live version is from UK, Newcastle, 13 September 1973. Record for KBFH, but never aired. It exists on a ton of boots, the best being the CD, EP CS Blues.
Amazing stuff, that version...

My favourite is the Hamburg 73 version from The Stars In The Sky They Never Lie. Great "pressure", great Keith solo, great horns towards the end. Rock'n roll at its best! Which version you think is best is a matter of taste, but no one looking for the best version should decide before having heard the Hamburg 73 version.

Totally agree. What a great rockin groove. I've often said that with different lyrics this could have been a major hit...a warhorse, so to speak. But then, if it had different lyrics, it wouldn't be Starf***er.

Was there a Stones show in Seattle during 1978 ?
