I was just reminded of the sparse information about how Mick Jagger introduced a relatively unknown guitarist named Stevie Ray Vaughan to David Bowie and SRV did some session work for Bowie who also wanted Stevie to tour...

It raises the question... was this before or after Ronnie joined the band... if before, imagine if Stevie had joined the Stones.... I'm trying to picture it...

I'm glad we got Ronnie in stead. But Bowie has had a few GREAT guitarists through the years. The best, of course, was Mick Ronson. But also Fripp, Alomar, Belew. Like the Stones, he's great at picking the best musicians.

I beleive Bowie met SRV after the 83 Montruex show and Jagger had nothing to do with the meeting, or so it says in the booklet from the 83 Montreux SRV DVD.

Yes, Bowie lived in the neighbourhood at that time. In Vevey, between Montreux and Lausanne. He bought a fantastic house that used to belong to Charlie Chaplin. At the banks of Lac Leman. Very beautifull indeed.

Jagger met SRV already in early 1980 through a friend of both SRV and Jagger. Jagger and Richards even went to a club to see SRV play, and invited SRV to play on an executive Stones part in '81 in New York (I believe it was the opening or closing of the '81 tour). SRV later (in about '85) jammed a couple of times with Wood and Richards in Wood's New York appartment.

Bowie met SRV at the Montreux Festival in 1983, and Jagger had nothing to with it. In my personal opinion, SRV's playing style fits the Stones just as Charlie would fit a death metal band.

Not that I know of, and we only know they did some jamming trough interviews with Wood.

Yes, and Earl Slick! Bowie has him in is touring-band for the last years. I rmember that Bowie was criticized in 1983 for taking SRV for the Let`s dance-album, cause compared to all the crazy and extraordinary guitarplayers he has had, SRV sounded.. well kind of boring and limited. He didn`t really fit. But for SRV it was an important step into the spotlight.

If you dig through back issues of the Beggars Banquet fanzine you'll see a photo of Mick and Woody backstage at a Stevie Ray gig in New York while they were working on UNDERCOVER and promoting the "Let's Spend the Night Together" film. You'll also find a reference to Stevie Ray being a likely candidate for working on Mick's first solo album. Something that never came to pass. Come to think of it, when Jerry hosted SNL in early 1986, Stevie Ray was the musical guest. There was speculation Mick would sing "Little Red Rooster" at the show, but again it didn't happen. Mick was there and appeared in the opening skit with Jon Lovitz' liar character.

Stevie is (was) a great talent from Dallas (Oak Cliff to be exact) He was big here before he was discovered. He woudl NOT fit The STones at all. Ronnie is a million times better fit.

SRV is the closest thing to Hendrix that ever existed.

NOW- his big brother, Jimmy, would fit the Stones perfectly!!!!!!!!!

No bigfrankie, I don`t agree. I like Jimmie Vaughn very much and have all his stuff. But he wouldn`t fit with the Stones. He has a very different philosophy in playing the guitar and sound of a band. I remember an interview years ago, that he don`t like having bassplayers in the band. So he does. The bass comes from the pedals of the Hammond B3. But all and all he is a fantastic (underrated!)player.

What good would it do with another dead Stones guitarist?

SRV is a Dutch brand name of a shop on wheels. The driver / salesman rings the bell in your street and you come out and buy an overpriced bread or apple. Good youth memories about that truck though.

LOL!! Same association here. I did a google search to see I could find a picture or even a website to bring back those memories. Alas, they seem to have become extinct, swallowed up by ah.nl and amazon.com...

My understanding was that Jagger was considering having SRV signed to Rolling Stones Records. The idea was nixed because blues albums traditionally do not sell in impressive numbers.

Keith and Mick and maybe Ronnie actually plays on one of the SRV albums - can't remeber which one. It has some resemblance to Keith and Mick playing at Ronnies first solo album.
Beside this SRV hated being "used" by David Bowie, this is why he didn't play much with him.
