Bill on Darryl Jones

Didn't Bill criticize Jones' bass playing several years ago saying he "plays too many notes"? I have been listening to the wonderfully re-mastered Ya-Ya's. Old Bill played quite a few notes himself sometimes.

Playing stiff R'nb is just a paycheck for a jazzmusician..

Yeah, Bill plays a lot more and a lot better than a lot of people think. It's mostly because he's never had a sound that really cuts through.

Strange. I'd say Bill was one of the most active bass players while Darryl is very conservative and almost lazy. Just listen to When the Whip Comes Down from 1981 and 2003. Bill plays creative bass lines all the time, but Darryl sticks to a simple root note pattern

... well, it hasn't actually been established that Bill really said what 71Tele thinks he may have said

For those who doubt he said it, I will try to find the entire quote and source.

it always is, to me, interesting how, when the subject of bass regarding the Stones comes up, sure enough someone will say Keith is the best Stones bass player

and how readily people dismiss Darryl Jones as a Stones bassist.
He and Bill are the two Stones bassists. they're both excellent, and played the necessary parts. Their styles are different, and still are supportive.

Paul played like a bass drum - not like a bass guitar. he had a terrible sound.

Bill Wyman is one of the best pop/rock bass players there ever. It's actually quite hard to play like he does...which essentially a very expressive quirky style. He plays only by feel, there's nothing planned or calculated about it at all. It's not that you can't copy his technique, it's that you just don't know what he's about to play next.

I don't agree that Keith/Ron/MickT are better bass-players than Bill. Ron and MickT are interesting bass players...expecially MickT (eg Coming Down Again and Shirley). Keith's bass playing is quite good at times, however there is sometimes an awkwardness to his playing (examples are Before They Make Me Run and Casino Boogie - compare these with the fluidity of Miss You). I'd say Keith is the worst bass-player the Stone ever had.

Darryl is sometimes a busy bass player, but it can soull-less and dull at times. He is undoubtably an talented musician...it's just that what he does doesn't always gell with the Stones' music.

bill was (and is) a hell of bassplayer. very underrated!!!
and i really like those kind of bass-sounds that dont cut through too much.
i love it when you feel and hear the bass but it is still somehow undefined...

Of course, all we can really judge for Darryl's playing with the band are concert performances and VOODOO LOUNGE. Regrettably, Darryl has largely been treated as part of the touring band and not been allowed to fully participate in BRIDGES TO BABYLON or A BIGGER BANG. Not having a bass player participate in the arrangement of tracks from the beginning works to the overall detriment of both albums.

It seems to me that the "famous bass lines" from Stones songs (Live with Me etc) didn't just "happen" to be played by Keith. Those were clearly songs where he had a clear idea of what the bass line would sound like or were songs where he wanted a bass line featured more prominently, so he just did it himself!

That certainly doesn't make him a better bass player than Bill though. Keith was obviously more in control of the recordings/song creation than Bill was. The songs were mostly finished by the time Bill showed up. He probably never had a chance to create a great bass line himself and have it featured in a recording (except his overall work on In Another Land which he did create).

I agree. Sometimes Bill played the bassline but Keith wiped it and re-recorded it himself.

IMHO a great bassplayer is only noticed when he stops playing.

I agree that Bill was a very distinctive and quirky bass player - starting with the sound of that homemade bass he used on most of the records. Darryl is more technically gifted perhaps, but I dearly miss Bill's quirkiness. In my mond that's the division between the "real" Stones and the "Vegas" Stones.

Bill was the veritable engine of the Stones sound.
