Love this thread. I miss Stu and Nicky. They were geniuses in their own way. Some very underrated keybord stuff on Goats Head Soup, with both of them contributing, as well as Billy Preston. Great keyboard album - Coming Down Again in particular and 100 years Ago. Even Mick on Hide Your Love.

Interesting biog./career resume of Nicky Hopkins.
I believe that there's something of the sort, including full discography, on Rocks Off.

(for those who can't be 'b'ed to go to Rocks Off site) The Tin Man Was a Dreamer is probably worth mentioning here - his early seventies solo work - included Mick Taylor, I think (from eroded memory), among others. Nice cover portrait of 'the Tin Man'

Nice to learn the Edward reference.

Im really glad Keith was late that day!

Well, well, well. It's a fine thing to see Chuck ripped because he's too nice a guy. Kids, at this stage of their lives, ALL the Stones are nice guys. Most of them are pushing 70, the retired one is well over 70, and most are grandfathers. If people are going to insist on that criticism, then those same people can NEVER say "I just met Mick/Keith/Bill/Charlie/Ron and boy was he a nice guy. He was as cool as could be". Instead, you have to write "I was very disappointed he didn't take a piss on the sidewalk, punch my face, grab my girlfriend's boobs and spit on me". Or, don't say "Saw Charlie at the horse auctions and he looked like a fine English gentleman". Instead, say "I was heartbroken Charlie didn't unzip, pull out his @#$%&, and compare sizes with the horse". Come on people, get real.

Plus, think about WHY there are even so many piano players to talk about. It's because they all brought something different to the Stones' sound at that particular time, They had what they were looking for right then. None play all that much like the other. At this point in the Stones' career, they need a guy who can more or less imitate the style of all who came before. Hence, Chuck. He's not exactly like any of them, but he can come close enough, so he'll do. He's what the band is looking for at this particular time.

One more thing- don't underestimate his contributions to the live set lists, ever. If it were up to Jagger, it would be 60 minutes, tops, of war horses. If Keith had his way, it would be 70 minutes of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters covers. Chuck is allowed a lot of control and input into the set lists. In other words, if you thought they suck now, they could REALLY suck without Chuck.

Hmmmm, nobody talks about Elton John!?!?!?!?!?

As I can remember proparly he did a guest appearance in 1975 or so.
It was planned for only 2 or 3 songs but Elton decided to stay for the rest of the show.
Keith was very pissed off (and showed that later when Elton came with his tribute for Lady Di. A song for dead blondes was Keith's quote).
Afterwards Mick was asked why they did not throw him of the stage.
He said: "We are British, we don't do such things" .......... ;-)

I don't know if there are any pictures of this one only guest appearance of EJ.

For me Nicky H is #1 then Stu, I saw Hopkins with The Jeff Beck Group in 68 and with TRS in 72 and with QuickSilver, totally different sound...Ive met Chuck L who is a very humble quiet dude, seems to me he is the musical leader in a technical sense and has the books of their repertoire of what they do on stage..I have seen Tim Reis from the horn section play piano while CL played another keyboard on one of their tours but forgot which song..

Why do people diss Chuck so much? The guy is a wonderful piano player. If he had never joined The Stones he still would have been well known among rock fans for his wonderful work with The Allman Brothers

I wonder if Tarle is the best Stones photographer ever. Maybe better than M Cooper, E Russell, B Gruen, Mankwowitz...the new pics on RS com are incredible. From Nellcote.
