American football games are divided into four 15-minute quarters, separated by a 12-minute break at half-time. There are also 2-minute breaks at the end of the first and third quarters as teams change ends of the field after every 15 minutes of play.

At the end of the first and third quarters, the team with the ball retains possession heading into the following quarter. That is not the case before half-time. The second half starts with a kickoff in the same way as the game began in the first quarter.

Each offensive team has 40 seconds from the end of a given play until they must snap of the ball for the start of the next play, otherwise they will be penalised.

The clock stops at the end of incomplete passing plays, when a player goes out of bounds, or when a penalty is called. The clock starts again when the ball is re-spotted by an official.

If a game is tied at the end of regulation, a 15-minute overtime period will be played. In the NFL, this is sudden death and the first team to score wins. Possession is determined before the period begins by a coin toss.

Being in the UK I only want to see the halftime part.

I`m going to DVD the Stones bit on a timer.

Rather than tape the whole thing at low quality all I want is the halftime bit.

How long after the start of the game is halftime?.......in soccer it`s 45 mins (with maybe 2 or 3 extra)

From experience American football is punctuated by numerous breaks in play when the clock is stopped so although the first two quarters last 30mins how long do they really last?

With Game time outs and Television time outs the 1st half will be close to at least 90 minutes. The total game will 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Most games run 3 to 3 1/2 but the average time that the ball is actually in play is 11 minutes.

Expect the first half to be longer than a regular season game. With a championship at stake, they tend to take more time, not just from the players perspective but also from the officials. You might just want to watch the first half, or at least turn on the game 30 minutes after start to be sure not to miss halftime.

Thx for the info guys. Here in Australia its mainly cricket during summer & Aussie-rules football in winter. We don't get much gridiron. Normally I wouldn't watch it but this is a good opportunity to check out what happens in the game.

There should be an official dvd from the NFL later this year that hopefully will have the full Stones show. Last years had all of the Paul performance.

Plan to start tapeing at around 7:30 PM Eastern Time and let it run for an hour.Or an Hour and a hlaf if you really want to be safe. That should to it and you shouldn't have to fast foward to much if you aren't interested in the football part. Although you may want to watch some of the commericals.
They are some of the best and funniest ones of the year during the game .
Enjoy.
