Technically, Prodigal Son isn't country, but gospel blues. And my favourite country song: Let's Go Steady.

The Stones did rap before rap was invented-Prodigal son does have a country-feel I think.

Folk music was not invented in the late 50s, early 60s with the folk revival,
singer-songwriter era. I'm assuming that's what you meant. As you all should now,
true folk music is music that has endured and passed down by oral tradition
and in various generes: railroad songs, work songs, ballads, Mountain songs, etc..
and usually not for profit. Handsome Molly from Jagger's Wandering Spirit is a folk song: notice how it says "traditional" on the sleeve? For God sakes, I think somebody wrote a whole book on the tune Barbara Allen. Unfortunatly, any dummy who stands there with an acoustic guitar is now considered a folk artist. Prodigal Son is certainlynot a folk song. Wilkins, I believe, was born in Mississippi and later moved to Memphis where he spent most of his life.
AS for the country songs, the Stones did a revved-up version
of Hank Snow's I'm Moving On which was a monster hit for him I believe in
the late 40s or early 50s and is considered a bona-fide country classic.

Talking about country, yesterday I installed lastfm on my computer, and set it to play one of the alt.country stations. I've been in awe most of the afternoon, some beautiful songs were played. It is highly recommended, not only to extend your knowledge about bands, but also just to enjoy the music. There's also a folk blues station, also amazing. You can find it here: [www.lastfm.com] .

Keiths version of "We Had It All" is excellent....but imo, he cannot compare to the deep, country soul of Waylon Jennings

LK, as usual I agree with your list. I'd like to add "Luckenbach" just for teh great line -"Only two things in life make it worth living, guitars in tune good and firm feelin' women". Gotta love that! Thanks for mentioning Billy Joe Shaver, a truly great songwriter. RIP Eddie Shaver. Watch your mail this week.

This was tough, I could easily list a top 100 and still feel like I was leaving off a ton of stuff. As far as the Stones, some of their stuff is country-flavored, but I wouldn't call any of it country music.

Old Five & Dimers - Waylon Jennings
Glad To See Her Go - George Jones
I Heard That Lonesome Whistle - Hank Williams
I Never Go Around Mirrors - Merle Haggard
Drifting Texas Sand - Webb Pierce
Roly Poly - Bob Wills & The Texas Playboys
You're Still On My Mind - George Jones
The Last Letter - Waylon Jennings
Everything She Touches Gets The Blues - Porter Wagoner
I can't Help IOt If I'm Still In Love With You - Hank Williams
