Waylon was pure destiny.......lost the coin toss for the fatal plane flight with Buddy Holly and went on to make some of the most soulful country records of all-time: "This Time"..."The Ramblin' Man"...."Honky Tonk Heroes"...."Waylon Live"....."Lonesome, On'ry & Mean"....."Dreaming My Dreams".........one of the most soulful and heartfelt country singers ever

Couldn't agree more. have you heard the new expanded Waylon Live? It's fantastic.
Dreaming My Dreams is one of the most overlooked masterpieces in any genre.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Possum and of course worship at the altar of Hank Sr, but for my money Waylon is the greatest voice country has known - the only true soul honky tonk singer.

and for anyone interested in new (but authentic country) THE DERAILERS come from the Buck Owens, Bakersfield sound school of country...."Reverb Deluxe" is their best to start out with.....they've got their roots in deep to the fine country tradition (no rootless "new" country in their sound)

Howdy Rooster Man...Charlie Pride is definitely up there

Again, I hate the racial thing, and I know you weren't asking me, but Charley Pride is the best known Black country singer.
Solomon Burke's "Just Out Of Reach (Of My Two Empty Arms)" is the greatest country song sung by a non-white singer. Absolutely kills any of Brother Ray's Countrypolitan stuff.

What about High and Dry? Great country song!

I heard a bluegrass band do Turd on the Run. When done with acoustic guitars and mandolins, it's very, very hillbilly.
