Angie, the meaning, maybe finally the truth.

Keith loved Anita.
He loved her disperately. You know that song "Angie"? It means
'Anita-I-Need-Ya'.
There's not many people who know that.
ANITA-I -NEED-YA

What a beautiful was been Anita.

It doesnt mean about a girl called Angela, nor the ex- David Bowie's wife.
I cannot post the link that I found about.

Mick wrote the lyrics. Keith called it "Mangy" when he composed the rhythm acoustic guitar 72-73.

I had the whole chord sequence down maybe a year ago with just the title Angie. It could have been Randy or Mangy or anything, you know, but Mick just picked up on the title and wrote a song around it. He added the strings - all the strings on the album are his idea. I don't know who chose it as a single. I think somebody said that it would make a change and that it would get a heavy reaction on AM stations. I'm really not interested in picking singles.

- Keith Richards, 1973

The basic melody and the title were mine. I don't think you can write really interesting rock and roll songs if you can't get into ballads and slower stuff. Quite often when you write a ballad it ends up as something else. Once we've got a song we tussle around with it, roll in the dirt with it. I'd recently had my daughter born, who's name was Angela, and the name was starting to ring around the house. But I'm into writing about my babies. Angie just fitted. I mean, you couldn't sing 'Maureen'...

- Keith Richards, 1993

I think Keith wrote the first line, I think it was his daughter (Angela). It was about love coming to a full stop. The actual name, I'm not sure where it came from, it's not about Angela Bowie. I think it's Keith's daughter's name.

- Mick Jagger, February 2002

I've said about a hundred million times that it wasn't (about Angela Bowie)... I don't think I had even met Angela Bowie when I wrote the rest of the lyrics.

- Mick Jagger, 2002

I think ruby is just quoting some Keith bio. Pretty sure one of the chapters in Bockris' book starts like that

Mick's just playing games. Keith's daughter didn't change her name from Dandelion to Angela till well after the song was written.

If you read early bio's on the Stones, the lyrics seem to describe Keith's r/ship with Anita very closely.

yeow...that's a great photo....so much beauty and menace on that face. I always thought it was about Anita, but I save a little bit for other theories because the Stones send out so many mixed signals.

It probably isnt about any one specific woman. The Stones are more likely to write about people as 'composites' rather than about one individual.

Could also be entirely fictitious and not remotely based on anyone. They're writers. Its not exactly unusual. Mick and Keith have even wrote songs about their own relationship and done it in a way to make it look like its about a woman.

On MTV's 'Rolling Stones weekend' back in 1995, Mick said in an interview that 'it's about someone (an actress I think he said) who is no longer with us'.

Remember her?

Mick isn't playing games here. Keith came up with the title "Angie." Did you read the quote from the time is on our side database? Here it is again. Note the date....1973

It's true - Keith's daughter's name at that time clearly was Dandelion NOT Angie.
Interestingly, in Marianne's book she mentions a rendezvous she and Mick had
just after she shot that Kenneth Anger film. (I'd have to go back to see what yr.)
It was outside a London boutique. They went upstairs and had sex.
If I'm not mistaken, he was married then. The song is essentially about an ended/
crumbling relationship, that's what made me re-think this.

>> Keith's daughter's name at that time clearly was Dandelion NOT Angie. <<

Keith (who should know) has stated that she was given both names right from the get-go: Dandelion Angela.
the quote rubylyn started the thread with is indeed in Bockris's book, but he's quoting Nick Kent,
who gets an awful lot wrong, including this. yes, there is a song with lyrics that form a play on "anita/i need a",
but it ain't Angie.

Keith's lyrics virtually never mangle the natural emphasis of words and phrases.
if he wants a lyric to mean anitaineedyou he doesn't try to cram it into two syllables.

Marianne Faithfull infamously takes credits being a subject (or an object, actually) of many Mick's songs ("Let's Spend The Night Together", You Can't Always Get What You Want", etc.), and I never been too sure about it. But I take the lyrics of "Angie" to be about her and of their relationship. At leastly partly. No evidence or anything, just a personal guess. No matter what Mick or anybody say...

When Dandelion Angela Richards married her Dominique, a proud father - Keith - walked her up the aisle, accompanied by "Angie".
And when Keith says, "I'd just had my daughter Angela born when I wrote it"... it's quite peculiar that some still insist this was a Jagger-composition about Marianne.
And it's also very strange that in one of the quotes here, Jagger pretends he barely knows Angela's name. She actually spent a lot of time with Mich and Bianca, before she moved to Doris in Dartford.

I'll venture forth into this again, knowing full well that it is purely speculative..

Look at the lyrics:

Angie, angie, when will those clouds all disappear?
Angie, angie, where will it lead us from here?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You cant say were satisfied
But angie, angie, you cant say we never tried
Angie, youre beautiful, but aint it time we said good-bye?
Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried?
All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke
Let me whisper in your ear:
Angie, angie, where will it lead us from here?
Oh, angie, dont you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet
I hate that sadness in your eyes
But angie, angie, aint it time we said good-bye?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats
You cant say were satisfied
But angie, I still love you, baby
Evrywhere I look I see your eyes
There aint a woman that comes close to you
Come on baby, dry your eyes
But angie, angie, aint it good to be alive?
Angie, angie, they cant say we never tried

And consider Keith's life and his r/ship with Anita at the time. They had everything their hearts could desire including a great love, but their mutual addiction to heroin had diminished their lives and damaged their relationship. To me, the lyrics reflect Keith's pain and despair at that situation and his wish that they could recover what they had lost.

I can't see it being about Marianne at all. Mick had already moved far away from Marianne; his r/ship with Marsha had begun and ended, and his marriage to Bianca had lost its' appeal by the time this song was published. Marianne was ancient history. Wild Horses was the swansong to her.

The original passage quoted in this thread (above) is indeed from Victor Bockris' tome about Keith. Mick has said (I believe on OGWT 1973) that he wrote most of the lyrics and that Keith had little more than the title of "Angie" in the way of lyrics.

Lol thanks, I know stonesrule. But didnt believed it.
To be honest, I was trying to know a bit more about Anita.
In MJcom I'd read a thread some months ago quoting the same question.
But.. I dont know yet where she has done after she'd broke up with Keith.
I know after the 73 tour there was been Ushi for him. And other men for her.
But, it's not a question of mere gossip mine. I dont mind so much, and I'm not use to read about.
....I knew, this was a silly story.
But, I'm still amazed from that one pic. Excuse me guys, but exist a creature like her?
A natural one, I mean.
With that breast, cant believe..
Plastic surgery? Hm?
Thanks for the lyrics.
