most unusual song on your stones top 10

What song on your Stones top 10 is one that most people wouldn't expect to see. For me, it's One Hit to the Body, which actually makes my top 5.

Mixed like Nikki & CD like Gary & 2,000 LYFH like Some Girl
are ranked hi by me. None of ´em on a Top 10 though...
But Mixed Emotions would maybe make it on a 20-25-list. At times.

'You Can't Catch Me?'

Damn Gazza, you are the deal.

How about 'Street Fighting Man' live in Chicago 1969.

When I was a kid I had a magazine that detailed the entire '69 tour. It referred to the Chicago concert as basically a disaster, specifically singling out 'Street Fighting Man,' on which it says Bill Wyman's bass was 'horribly out of tune.'

WELLLLLL.

I just checked out the only known extant recording of that show (poor audience quality at best). Yep, Bill and the whole band are out of tune at that point (if not well before). And the audience has just finished chanting something at the hundreds of Chicago police who were present to (presumably) keep order.

But after HTW brings the house down, Mick tells the crowd something to the effect that 'this next one's for you, Chicago' (a direct reference to the Street Fighting Men who had packed Chicago streets only months before during the 1968 Democratic National Convention).

My point (and I do have one): For perhaps the only time during the 1969 tour, the very instant Keith hits the opening chords to Street Fighting Man, the whole arena goes absolutely crazy.

Most of the time in '69 the audience didn't even know what song it was until Mick sang the first verse.

But in Chicago in 1969, they were READY.

Cheers. I think its the most underrated song in their entire catalogue and the best cover they ever did.

Never been played live, either. Imagine THAT chuggin' along as one of the b-stage songs.

I can pick alot of "obscure" stones songs that are "great hidden gems"... but they aren't on my "Must Have Ten" list...

The first 9 of my "Must Have 10" list is mostly predictable: WH, SV, JJF, YCAGWYW, GS, SFTD, HTW, TD, and Sway... those are 9 of the most recognizable on my Top 10...

So, what song "belongs" in my top 10, that's at least a bit unusual... it really boils down to 3 songs: 2000 Light Years, Not Fade Away, and Like a Rolling Stone. Of that group, Not Fade Away just blows me away as a live song, even as a concert opener...

BUT... as good as Dylan does LARS, the Stones version of this song is so special and works every time I've heard it live... an incredible b-stage tune... There's something very "unique" (translate unusual) about THE ROLLING STONES singing "... like a rolling stone... " almost as if "they are the authority" on being a rolling stone.

Answer: Like a Rolling Stone... great in the studio, great live, more unusual because it's a cover and I love their version... and it's truly on my "Stones Top Ten".

"It's just that demon life has got me in it's sway..."

Probably 2000 LYFH. Or Sad Sad Sad. Maybe even Moonlight Mile. Not quite sure.

bayou:

couldn't be more in disagreement with you on LARS. Jagger's singing is pathetic on LARS - he shouldn't have even bothered - he apparently doesn't even begin to understand the anger in the lyrics.

Oddballs (maybe not) in my Top 10:

Whip Comes Down
Parachute Woman
Some Girls
Stray Cat Blues

Interesting... but I don't find Jagger's singing to be without angst, and the backing vocals of the Stones version are really great...

...and at the end of the day, no band is more qualified to ask how it feels to be a rolling stone than the Rolling Stones... guess that's part of the appeal of the song for me... like it's almost an historical event when they play it live on the b-stage, a knockout for me every time

.... "you got no secrets to conceal.... how does it feel... to be on your own... just like a rolling stone..." then they bring the harmonica in... it's great.

But this must be a PERSONAL FAVE because I've heard alot of critics of LARS, like they never want to hear the Stones do it again. So, it definitely qualifies as an "unusual" song... and it's in my personal Top 10 or 12, I'll confess to that.

from the first time i heard it i always thought DOWN THE ROAD APEICE.....really captured the stones at their fundamental best......an old time blues number that really rocks!!!

SHINE A LIGHT and LOVING CUP were two of my other unusual top 10 stones songs....then they took them out of obscurity in recent years.....as they have been performed on several recent tours. it's always nice to see the boys agreeing with me as to which "older" songs need to made young again.

My top 10 list changes every day. The usual "unusuals" could be:

play with fire (always loved that one), off the hook, goodtimesbadtimes, undermy thumb (unusual?) haveyouseenyourmotherbaby / whosdrivingyourpalne (stupid bluesbutIloikit), of course, we love you (this is always in), shesmiled sweetly, miss amandajones, the great SING THIS SONG ALL TOGETHER (see what happens), Rambler studio version, I Just Wanna See His Face & Casino Boogie, Star Star, If You Can't Rock Me, Fingerprint, I Don't Know Why, melody, Everything Is Turning to Gold, Let Me Go, Neighbors, Tie You Up, Feel on baby, Had It with You, Slipping Away, You Don't Have to Mean It ...

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO PICK ONE?

Moonlight Mile ( : I like "world music" - stupid expression btw )
Continental Drift ( : do )
She smiled sweetly ( : sweet )

- hmmm I don't have a Stones top 10 and "unusual"....? Seems that the Stones have made loads of "unusual" stuff. Makes them...."unusual"
