Ronnies Guitar playing still terrible
Posted by: RobertJohnson ()

In the moment I hear some songs from MSG and Toronto. Ron Woods guitar work is still terrible. His mistakes are so massive that they destroy the songs entirely. So we have a band with one very good guitarist and a pupil who has forgotten to rehearse. Sad, sad , sad.

So why on earth do you spend time listening to bootlegs when it is bothering you that much?

Cause I can't get enough Stones music; furthermore I hope that Ron Wood sometimes will improve. Though I've been a Stones fan scince about 35 years, I want to hear music in a good quality. I've no trouble with the bootlegs, many bootlegs have a better sound quality than the official albums. - I'm sorry but in my opinion Ron Wood destroys the reputation of the band in the moment.

Ok, what do you want, Mick & Keith to eliminate Ronnie from the band immediately?

What is your suggestion now? Answer: there is none. End of the tour.

Think about what you are writing before you post this nonsense. Ron Wood is fine. Personally I like the fact that Ronnie has fun on stage. If he messes up a bit it is no big deal.

Writing that Woody isn't playing that well according to some boots you've listened to, isn't 'nonsense'. Robertjohnson doesn't suggest the Glimmers should loose Woody. Think before you reply. Or at least read the initial post.

my response was meant that someone should slap him silly so maybe he can remember how to play.

i think ronnie is a good guy, funny on stage and off stage. he played great during the past years, he still play good for me. Without him the rolling stones wouldn't surely be the same, and maybe there wouldn't be the rolling stones anymore. He always helped to keep together mick and keith. I read this is not a happy period for him, I just don't care about two wrong notes each song.

Why don't you call Ronnie and tell him to rehearse and "get his shit together"?

Why don't you look Ronnie up and slap him silly. That would probably improve Ronnies guitar work.

I don't think I ever saw you stating anything nice about the band, except for something they did 35 years ago. Pffff, what a waste.....

I'm really sorry if I mistook you for another. I'm just tired of the nagging.

I think Ronnie plays ok and I know most people agree even if some Einstein kind of guitar experts think he doesn't deserve the guitar nobel price so that is ok for me. But you have to understand Ronnie plays the way he likes and he will not - repeat not - change his style just because a handful Mick Taylor fans don't like it. And they won't replace keith. And they won't replace Mick. And they won't replace Charlie. It's the Rolling Stones. can't be that hard to understand, can it?

Do you really expect Ronnie to change his style because you say you don't like his playing?

Sheeeesh... The Whiners keep whining and the Naggers keep naggin'...What the hell do you expect from a guy who free-based coke every day for 10 years straight and drank a bottle and a half of booze every day for over 30 years. I'm impressed that he doesn't pee in his pants and dribble spit from his mouth when he's on stage.

I don't think Ronnie has changed his style at all. After all, he's been playing Tumbling Dice etc for a long time now. It's just that on the last couple of tours, his playing has noticeably deteriated.

One thing I've noticed is that he often starts playing the solos fine and then they just tail off into sheer tunlessness nonsense

Yeah he sure has had some time to practice their songs, the same songs over an over. Maybe that's the problem. Inspiration is important.

the stones never meet up at the end - This is no jam band come on now ,its canned
arrangements down to keith throwing out his pick to the crowd.

Woody cant even play a correct solo on Start Me Up these days.

My point too.

I think it must be possible here to give a negative review of our band. I'm a Rolling Stones fan since about 35 years. I like the kind of guitar work Ron Wood adds to the band in the last decades more than the brilliant work of Mick Taylor, cause I think that it fits better to the guitar style of Keith Richards. The discussion here isn't in my opinion about guitar styles, it is a discussion about a guitarist who has extraordinary abilities, but who isn't able to play guitar in an acceptable manner, for the moment at least. I don't want Ron Wood to be replaced by another guitarist. I want to hear that he improves his guitar work during the BB tour. That's all ...

After all these decades spending time drinking so much, smoking everything and and sniffing the rest, no hopes to see ronnie in good form again. His health is fragile. We must accept the stones are old people with a tumultuous past and they couldn't give us in live what they used to. We are pleased to see them live because somewhere they are part of our lives but they aren't the best rockn'l'roll band in the world like by the past. This period is over.
Please Bjornulf, let the people are the right to write what they think about the stones. They are not god or lords.

Excellent post and I agree entirely. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a problem with Ronnies style of playing, it's the fact that he struggles to produce decent solos on stage. I don't think Ronnie has ever actually changed his style.

Unfortunately, it seems like he changed his sound, and to be honest - it doesn't seem like he's very comfortable with it. The fuzztone is just - noise...

Well, IMO it's not that bad. He still rocks, but when he's on his own and plays solos it doesn't always work, both soundwise and performancewise

C'mon..we're talking Ronnie Wood here..not Clapton Beck or Page..I never thought
of Wood to be one of the great strummers..just good old Ronnie Wood from the
Faces..out to have a good time and maybe earn some money along the way...if you
want virtuoso, go listen to Esteban.

<C'mon..we're talking Ronnie Wood here..not Clapton Beck or Page..I never thought

When I listen to YCAGWYW from MSG 75 (Hold On Tight) I hear a virtuouso in the same league as the players you mentioned. Top notch playing. I realize that he won't play like this again, but if he could come up with something like f.i. the solo on Undercover from Atlantic City 1989, I'd be satisfied...
