Well--I agree--beggars banquet--Let it bleed--Sticky Fingers--Exile on Mn-street are really good albums---but what about "Aftermath" "Between the Buttons"-Out of our heads".? I prefer this-ones. the german vinyl "around and around" is awesome. So, what I wanna tell you---All Stones Albums are highlights!! ---and thank for a great "Bigger bang" in 2005!!!
The problem is that it's bloody hard to compare the mid 60's material with the later ones. The music deloped so fast and you can easily hear the difference between music from 1964 och 1967 for instance. Music record 1967 would have been impossible to do back in 1964. But Sticky Fingers and A Bigger Bang sounds more similar even if there is 34 years between them.
Three of the "Big Four" MUST BE: Get Yer Ya Yas Out, Let It Bleed, and Sticky Fingers...
You pick the fourth... many will say Exile on Main Street but I never was crazy about that album... it just had too many fillers unlike the "True Big Three" which didn't have a weak track between them...
Many would say Beggars Banquet but while there are masterpieces on it (just as there are masterpieces on nearly every album, especially Exile), there's an un-eveness that puts it a notch under the Big 3 IMO.
So that still leaves room for one more album in the Big Quartet...

I've gotta go with the traditional big four - Beggar's, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile. Aftermath, Some Girls, Tattoo You and A Bigger Bang would be in my next tier (not counting live albums - Ya Ya's rules!)

But doesn't Ya-Yas have some FIRST TIME releases ? Is Honky Tonk Women on any album prior to YaYas ? It was also the first release of Jumpin' Jack Flash and Little Queenie if I'm not mistaken.

The studio version of Honky Tonk Women was released as a 45 prior to Ya Yas and either went to #1 or got really close. I guess you are right that it was not on an album at that point, or was it on Thru The Past Darkly? It was definitely on Hot Rocks, but I don't think that came out until 1972, and I'm too lazy to walk ten feet and pull out my Stones albums and look at them. Someone with a good memory help me out here.

They were both on Through The Past Darkly(Big Hits Vol. 2).

If I'm not mistaken, it's the first "non greatest hits" album to contain: Honky Tonk Women, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and Little Queenie...
And thru the past darkly wasn't that big of an album when it came out... Get Yer Ya Yas was really THE ALBUM that woke a whole generation (the vietnam draft generation) up to the Stones.
Plus it's their first "major" live album so for these reasons I still put it in the "Big Three".

If by too many fillers on Exile On Main Street, you mean maybe one filler at most, then I agree.Otherwise,I recommend that you take a closer listen. It's right up there with the best albums ever recorded. This is the disc that by far and away,I pull off the rack the most and I'd have to say my rack has some pretty darn good discs on it.
The big four are the big four and rightly so. Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street are the Stones best although i would argue Goat's Head Soup is up there with them. I don't believe the Stones were as consistent at other times in their career although Aftermath, Between The Buttons and Tattoo You are all fine albums. Some Girls i haven't mentioned because it's never been a favourite of mine. I don't think there's any filler on Exile On Main Steet - every track contributes to the listening experience. Strangely one of my least favourite songs is All Down The Line - i have always loved the slide work but have never felt the song was one of the Stones best.
