Yeah, BHoC was always a great fan of that particular band....and for good reason too! Little Napoleon rocks!

I can understand not liking The Band - but hating them? I would reserve that kind of emotions for Bay City Rollers - and then again - could not really hate a band?

Love the band.
One of the greatest rockers I know is the Band backing Dylan doing "I don't believe her, she acts like we never met" (or something like that)

Bobby Bland's Share Your Love is a damn fine record but
Manuel out front of The Bands version is possibly his finest moment ......CLASSIC

that's quite a bold statement - cos the man had countless superb moments - but i'll ponder it overnight and respond in the morning....

in the meantime - anyone else have a chronic problem saying Bobby Blue Bland out loud? i always get it wrong on first try....

Acadian Driftwood, The Rumour, All La Glory and their cover of Dylan's When I Paint My Masterpiece, must go down as four of the greatest tracks by anybody of all time.

...feel so tall, like a prison wall.

These old love letters
Well, I just can't keep
'Cause like the gambler says
Read 'em and weep

fantastic band.

They did some fine stuff!
And I really like Levon Helms drumming!

But I'm not a real fan and not everything is that good.

"Chest Fever" = great song

The organ kind of reminds me of a Deep Purple.

Yes. Exactly. First time I heard it I thought it was Purple.

Love The Band! Virtuoso musicians (in the best sense of the word) and a unique, instantly recognizable sound: rusty, wooden, archaic.

Rockman - Ponderosa - like in the old US TV-series - The Cartwrights or something? That's old - that's from my childhood and I'm old! You have a great memory, man.

Many people here might know that Blondie Chaplin replaced Richard Manuel on vocals, after he passed away. I think I have a recording somewhere, of a tour of Japan, where Blondie's vocal skills really shine through. Taking over Manuel's vocal parts was a tough call, but Blondie pulled it off rather well, I think.

To paraphrase Neil Young in the Waltz...It was one of the great pleasures of my life to pay my respects to Levon Helm and shake his hand when he and the Barnburners were in California a few years ago. Those first three albums are an extraordinary achievement. A rich, rich musical experience on all levels, writing, arranging, singing, playing. This music was lived.

BTW: According to an impeccable source Levon thinks the Rock of Ages concert of late '71 was the best the band ever played. That is a wonderful live recording.

After watching The Last Waltz yes...Richard Manuel is my personal fave ..always thought Rick Danko was the owner of that high voice that matches Dylan that well, later I learned it was Mr Manuel..

As Levon said once: Richard had a teardrop in his voice.

In my personal opinion, the Richard had the richest voice in business.

I love thei instrumentations; it helped that they were all multi intrumentalists and singers. But the way Robbie played electric is fabulous. Hardly any solos; excellent.

Just read the newspaper, and guess what! Garth Hudson's going to do a concert less than half a mile from my home! Great news. Hope he's playing several European cities so that many of you get the opportunity to see and hear him.

The Band. Magical Cosmic American Music. Log-cabin rock.

The thinking-man's Rock band. An mellifluous ensemble of wild, woodsy angels.

They created a rich tapestry of musical quicksilver...it was simultaneously fragile and yet sturdy as an oak tree. I loved that tension. And albums such as The Basement Tapes, Music from the Big Pink, and The Band are miracles that belong in the pantheon of the greatest recording ever made.

All hail The Band.
