Long Long While in Casino. Exremely Violent scene towards the begining when they are still back home and Bob Deniro notices a pen at the bar and asks the guy next to him if the pen is his, and the guy tells him to take the pen and and go F himself ...Lets just say Joe Pessci's character does not take this lightly. the muisc is used brilliantly. The way the song starts off slow then builds to a crescendo helps to make the scene intesnse.

Great call with Casino/pen stabbing scene. Casino must set the record for number of Stones songs used: satisfaction, long long while, gimme shelter, sweet virginia, CYHMK just off the top of my head. But I have to go with JJF from Mean Streets also...

The opening with Tell Me is awesome too:

This one's got my nomination, along with CYHMK in Blow at the beginning.

I hardly know any of these movies!

A couple of nights ago I was watchhing the move "21" which ended with You Can't Always Get What You Want. Horrible! They added these crap drum things in after the choir intro. It was almost like a remix. That was the first time I heard a Stones song in a movie. confused smiley

Was there a period when the Stones refused to let their music be used in movies and on movie soundtracks???

It seems they've only embraced the idea in the last 25 yrs.

Was it frowned upon? Was nobody interested? Were they extremely choosey?

It probably costs a pretty penny to use a Stones song.

Is it now merely seen as a cash cow for the Stones?

I think the first major movies w/Stones songs I remember were Coming Home & The Big Chill.

The Big Chill may have been the floodgate that opened (classic rock used as soundtrack) and then
maybe the use of The Beatles REVOLUTION for the Nike commercial.

Any thoughts?

Let It Loose in that Bobby Darin bio (Beyond The Sea) from 3/4 yrs back, the one with Spacey. Not a great movie by any means but the song starts playing just as he learns that his sister is really his mother.

You Cant Always Get What you Want in the Big Chill. If I recall, didnt that make You Can't Always Get What You Want a song now requested at funerals?

>It seems they've only embraced the idea in the last 25 yrs

"You Got The Silver" was in ZABRISKIE POINT in 1970; MEAN STREETS was '73. I don't think it's a matter of the Stones embracing the idea so much as filmmakers using music differently (and more abundantly) now than a few decades back.

Of course, Ashby's substantial use of the Stones in COMING HOME could be seen as a flashpoint of sorts; I don't even think Scorsese (SAL aside) has ever used as much Stones music in one film.

The Mean Streets examples are great ones.

Half of Scorsese's budget for the film went to getting the rights to the Stones songs. Scorsese believed that he needed the songs to make the movie work, and the Stones seemed to know that they could get the kind of money they were asking. Turns out, they were both right.
