i have the criterion dvd...so i'll wait to hear reviews from IORRers before I consider it.
to be honest i haven't watched it in a couple years...

Apart from the three new tracks, these are exactly the same extras as on the Criterion disc. Back in 2000, Sympathy, Stray Cat Blues and Live With Me were also announced as bonus tracks for the Criterion disc but they were dropped at the last minute. So this footage has been ready for release for 10 years...
The main feature of the Criterion disc is not in widescreen so maybe this is a brand new transfer. But since this new version will be a PAL disc, I hope it won´t be running 4% fast with increased soundtrack pitch (-> see also: European Shine A Light DVDs).

well if it has sympathy- stray cat and live with me count me in, hate to keep buying all these versions is the only problem i have with it, why is it ok for these three songs now but not then?

Probably because like every film, theres unused extra footage which if used originally would probably have made the film too long for a cinematic release.
The original movie runs for about 90 minutes. Standard length for a documentary or music film, especially in the early 70s.
