Leonard Cohen

I think Cohen is underrated - he should have been a bigger star.

I have to admit to not really understanding what that song was really about until you put that clip on here a few weeks back.

To describe Cohen as brilliant would be an understatement.

my thoughts, too. one fan's overrated is the next fan's underrated. it all evens out....let's just say each and ever act is merely RATED.

The Stones after 1981 & definitely not Michael Jackson. He was brilliant live, nobody could touch him, even later in his career.

Nirvana, Guns'N'Roses, Oasis and every other "Britpop" band you can possibly think of. Pure hype.

I would think that would probably be the purpose of the person starting this thread. No good can come of it as far I can tell.

Bob Dylan? If he died in '67 his place in modern popular music would be secure. Besides, he rises above the word "act."

Janis? When she's on she goes where few singers dare. She can make the hairs on my arms stand up, she's so scary powerful. She leaves blood and her heart on the stage. A blues/soul equivalent to Judy Garland.

Michael Jackson? Catchy tunes, but I do not listen to him much. But I doubt if I could have taken my eyes off him on stage. Now there's an ACT.

Well that's just the kind of statement that shows indeed how overrated Dylan is. I actually like Dylan a lot, but reading fan threads about Dylan is an astonishing experience. Here I see his recent singing compared to Jackson Pollock's painting; there, I read that he is a sort of prophet, and whatnot. Incredible. I guess there is a simple mechanism at hand; the more one's idol decays, the more the dellusion extends in its defense. Wierd.

Janis is overrated by the fans who have not listened to Irma Thomas, Betty Lavette, Betty Harris or many other female soul singers. Janis is actually full of mannerism which often sound, from an emotional perspective, quite hollow; ditto her awful version of Summertime, definitely one of the most overrated recordings in history, very poor taste. From a musical perspective, these mannerisms quite simply make up for the lack of subtlety of her singing. She is great when she belts out a fast tune (great, but not the best), and she recorded the wonderful version of Me and Bobby McGee; to my taste, that's more or less it. So she definitely qualifies as overrated to me.

Michael Jackson, overrated? As a musician and performer, surely not. If anything, he is underrated as a singer. His rhythmic and percussive use of breathing is totally ground-breaking; and, in every respect, he brought a degree of precision to his work that was completely new. Consumate pro. Just as some Brazilian football teams forced the whole world to raise their game at once, so did Thriller instantaneously revolutionize the standards of professionalism in music. Incredible achievement.

Edited because I did not understand the quoting mechanism!

Whoever offered Abba $1 Billion for a reunion concert seriously over-rated their talents.

That has nothing to do with there "talents" but the "abillity" to fill a stadium and generate a profit.

Then the promoter over-rated the degree of interest in an Abba reunion. If I'm wrong, and interest turned out to be huge, then the people buying the tickets would have been over-rating Abba's entertainment value.

Britpop was superb. Very exciting times and some super GUITAR band music...

Different opinions - that's just fine. I, for one, can't believe how many people here mention Springsteen as "overrated", but if that's their opinion, so be it.

Sir Bruce would be nice. Considering how popular he is across the pond.
