"Best bootlegs guide" Record Collector or Mojo? When?
Posted by: rootsman ()

Some years ago one of these magazines had an article about the best Stones bootlegs.
Does anyone one know which magazine - year/number? I believe I have it, but can´t find it...
Also, any comments about what the article says?

Think it was the Mojo magazine "special issue" that was dedicated to Rolling Stones only - the "best bootlegs" were the standard well-known SBD recordings...Brussels 73, Leeds 71, Atlantic City 89, Philadelphia 72, Hampton 81 etc. No surprises IOW

Thanks,
but it´s not the Mojo Stones special "Classic Rare & Unseen" (Volume 1 Issue 12).
I´m pretty sure it was a regular issue.

Oops, it wasn't...?

I went to the shelf...found it; it's Record Collector from June 1999 (issue 238).

Yeah, that´s a great issue with lots of Stones content!

However, it´s not what I´m searching for...
It´s a bit newer and has the titles of the bootlegs - some of which I didn´t recognize, even though I kept up with what was released until the end of the nineties.

Double oops..!
(it does have the titles, in no. 238, though..."Sweet Home New York City" made it to #2....surprisingly)

Stopped purchasing Record Collector in 2000/2001, so I wouldn't know about any more recent top 10 list

Thanks a lot Eric!
I think it came a couple of years later than that though, and as I remember it, it was an article about bootlegs - not shows.
In the meantime I´ll re-read issue 238!!

Is there such a guide available for bootleg DVD's? It would be most helpful as far as video and sound quality are concerned. Some of the boots that I have are great and some are really bad and not woth watching.

I've been collecting mags with Stones content as well.
I remember both mentioned mags but I can't think of that newer bootleglist at the moment.

Was it a big article and like how many boots were on that list?
Just a few or an extensive list?

My memory isn´t that good about this...
I think it was about five/six pages with maybe 8-12 bootlegs (with pictures), possibly only CDs. It was more an article than a list.
Several of the titles were definitively not released until after the nineties.

It is not Record Collector! I checked all possible issues...

Could it be the "Mojo Collections" Issue one? It has Keith on the cover. It wasn't a Stones only magazine but issue one had a good portion of Stones content. I have contributed to a couple of UK magazine articles on Stones bootlegs one of which was definately a Record Collector one but the other could well be Mojo Collections, unfortunately all my mags get banished to my storage unit as I have way too many so I can't look it up.

That's the one Rockman :-) (I mean the issue I was refering to not the one with the Bootleg guide we are all trying to remember!).

I actually have the one and only 6 foot tall display of the magazine cover. It was displayed for the launch in the window of the Virgin Mega Store in Picadilly Circus.

I've got an old Record Collector that has a big article on the best Sticky Fingers era bootlegs and collectibles.

Thanks all for your efforts!

There´s another Stones Mojo Special Edition - 40th Anniversary Collectors´s Edition from 2003; but it´s not in there either.
I now think it´s a regular Mojo issue that doesn´t mention Stones on the cover.

Hope it´s not just my imagination...
