Best Stones covers

Listening to Kiss "Dynasty" right now and 2000 Man is the best Stones cover I have ever heard. Im sure this topic has been "covered" before but just wanted to give some of MO. Kiss was a campy crap band (and i loved them as a kid just the same) but that cover still rocks. Dynasty isnt too bad either. Kiss tried to cash in on the disco crap with Dynasty. Think it was cool though how they reached back to '67 and covered that Stones song. Ace does a good job on that song. Best Stones cover to me. Any other Stones covers u guys like ?

The best Stones covers: One label's opinion

Regular readers of this blog will know that Thursday's regular feature has traditionally (if a four-month-old blog can be said to have traditions) been playlists. Now that we're featuring a weekly playlist in the paper on Tuesdays, we figured we'd run that here on Tuesdays (Monday nights, actually) and do something else on Thursdays.

Which I'd like to be lists, of various sorts. Various lists ranging from the greatest all-time songs to the best guitar solos have drawn good responses from you, so it seems to be worth a shot.

This one's a little less generalized than the examples above. I just got an album called Paint It Black, subtitled The Compilation of The Rolling Stones cover tracks. (There may be an apostrophe missing somewhere in there, but never mind, let's keep my inner copy editor stifled for now.)

I'm going to list the tracks the compilers believe constitutes the definitive Stones covers collection (or probably the definitive collection that they could license readily). Then I want to turn it over to you -- what Stones covers do you think should be on a collection of this type? What are the best Stones covers? Then I'll chime in with some of my own later on.

Tracklist follows, with assorted footnoted comments.

David Bowie/Let's Spend the Night Together (*)

Rod Stewart/Street Fighting Man (*2)

Aretha Franklin/Jumpin' Jack Flash

Otis Redding/Satisfaction

Linda Ronstadt/Tumbling Dice

Ike & Tina Turner/Honky Tonk Women

Bryan Ferry/Sympathy for the Devil

Grand Funk Railroad/Gimme Shelter

Mighty Lemon Drops/Paint It Black (*3)

Tony Merrick/Lady Jane (*4)

Ramones/Out of Time

Flying Pickets/Get Off My Cloud (*5)

Jason & The Scorchers/19th Nervous Breakdown

Exodus/Bitch (*4)

Miranda Lee Richards/Dandelion (*6)

Leon Russell/Wild Horses

Quireboys/Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)

Gilby Clarke/Dead Flowers

Footnotes:

* Never a favorite of mine. Already this compilation's in trouble by me.

*2 I was curious -- does Rod Stewart cover any Stones songs on his new Great Rock Classics of Our Time album? Answer -- no. Too busy covering great rock classics by Cat Stevens, Bread and Bonnie Tyler, apparently.

*3 I actually like this version, and the group, but it's sure a strange segue from eight global superstars to the Mighty Lemon Drops

* 4 Not familiar with these tracks

* 5 Just fyi for those unfamiliar with the Flying Pickets, they're an a cappella group.

* 6 Obscure but cool version of relatively obscure but cool song. Points to the compilers for this one.

OK, I'll bet the collective wisdom out there can come up with some killers that were missed. Have at it.

This, and Bobby Dare's cover of "The Last Time".

Kiss' "2,000 Man" also is great. Here's a cool acoustic live version from their 1995 "MTV Unplugged" special:

Don't know if it is "The Best", but one of my favorites in Mothers Little Helper, by Belgian singer Arno Hintjens.

I came accross a cover of Satisfaction a while back by Junior Wells that knocked me out. Complete blues-style reinterpretation of the song.

I have also always enjoyed the Devo take on Satisfaction. Love the video.

Flamin' Groovies LP "Now" includes very nice versions of Paint It Black & Blue Turns To Grey, but the best thing I ever heard is Checkerfield Kings album "Let's Go Get Stoned"

You're right, Chesterfield, not Checkerfield.
I only have flac files given to me by my brother-in-law, and i often listen to that album, and do you know their album "Drunk On Muddy Waters" ? And Surfin' Rampage ? they are so talented, they can play anything with class. I miss words in english languange to explain what I feel about that band.

my two favourites:

<<As Tears Go By Johnny Thunders>>

...speaking of Thunders; there's an audience recording of a 'Stones Tribute' show he and Richard Lloyd - backed by a couple of the Heatbreakers - did. Includes a fantastic cover of Play With Fire

Other than Otis', Ike & Tina's and The Burritos' covers, I'll nominate the reggae version of Salt Of The Earth by The Cables
