yes really great. Not the same for the boring beatles. (or springsteen or ac/dc)
"saturday night fever" one of the best ever.

For POP Music, they are good. I always liked "Nights on Broadway"

I find the early ('67 - 69) stuff has real charm, with marvelous melodies if sometimes less than first rate lyrix. Especially dig the new 3 cd deluxe "Odessa" from Rhino, with its lush, otherwordly production and haunting melodies - very underrated.
Heck who can hate a band w/ a song titled "I Have Decided to Join The Air Force" (or something pretty close)

Great band must say that I'm not a disco fan, Odessa one of the greatest records.

Best song "To Love Somebody" (check out Eric Burdon's version)

Check this songs out............

My understanding is that there is a musical in the works that will be a Las Vegas exclusive to the Wynn Hotel.

Nicos you are so spot on about Eric Burdon's version of "To Love Somebody". One of my all time favorite songs. He does an incredible job with it. Great call.

the irony is their disco success (which you either love or hate) gave everyone notice to their great songs from 60's early 70's !

I do think after 1970 and before Arif Mardin they did get too saccharine - 'How Can You Mend," ugh, Trafalgar, 2 Years On. But rock/pop fan who digs the Beach Boys, Kinks, and other rock immortals must surely take pleasure in 'Holiday', with its bittersweet longing and nostalgia, expressed thru perfect intersection of melody and emotional meaning. This is the marvel of much of their greatest late 60s material, reaching an earthbound yet somehow ethereal peak on the "Odessa" project....

how about the 'Office' episode when they are learning to give CPR to a dummy, and then they sing 'Stayin' Alive'....!!

Some great great songs over a forty plus year period.

Would be very sad to be Robin or Barry losing two brothers so early.

Maurice Gibb was and still is very underrated in my book. Played alot of instruments well - not as great a songwriter as the biggest bro (but then few are) but still a real talent in that area - and was a funny bugger to boot.

Another band that Aussies claim as their own - but I guess they're pommys really hey Rockman?

I admit they have some great grooves. Love their harmonies as well...
But I only have their Greatest Hits collection, I should branch out.

I happened to play a Bee Gees cd today. It was Horizontal from 68. I really loved their 67 to 69 stuff alot. Their disco stuff was okay did have a few good ones. I did hear last year Robin & Barry were gonna record soon a new BG cd. First cd I got by them I think the name is Spick and Speaks or something like that. This came before their enormous Bee Gees 1st.......which everyone was asking who are these guys they sound like the Beatles.

Not me mate. I'm seventh or eighth generation but no naughty blood in my veins.grinning smiley

Just that us Aussies have a habit of 'over claiming' sometimes me finks ala Split Enz - Crowded House - Bee Gees and at a pinch ACDC.

I was toying with the idea of buying the Odessa (3 CD Deluxe Edition), which was released in January this year. Has anyone bought it and have anything informed to say about it (the original verson too)?

Cheers,
SonicD

Some great songs and singing.

Rod Stewart does a great cover of "To Love Somebody" on his box set "Storyteller". It features Booker T. and The M. G.'s and is one of Al Jackson's last sessions. Cropper is perfect as usual.

I think the Bee Gees are OK. However, their songs I like the most are the ones they gave to other artists: "Heartbreaker", "Guilty", "Islands In The Stream" and "Chain Reaction".

I'd be too embaressed to own a Bee Gees CD. They conjur up awful images of 40-year-old hags on tacky Hen Nights.

I suppose their early repertoire is more credible, mind.

Believe it or not, that actually has the benefit of being true. The beat of Stayin' Alive is the best beat for performing CPR. (Google CPR and Stayin' Alive).

Who knew that disco actually had a purpose? ;-)
