As the Stones still in there winter sleep, here is a great band that was there time way ahead.
Keep on Running from 1965, Gimme some loving from 1966 and I’m a man from 1967 great rocking tunes with a great singer.

First real rock band I think...........

Keep on Running seems to have influenced the Allman Brothers.

The funny thing is that Steve Winwood was only 16 in 1964 when they released the song "Dimples"

Young Steve Winwood was a prodigy, reminds me of Young Stevie Wonder with such obvious talent at a tender age.

he was very young and very talented. but i don't think they were the first rock band.

Great stuff! This is probably the reason the Stones sought out Jimmy Miller as a producer?

I really like their live-in-the-studio performance of "Pretty Woman", contained in the "Eight Gigs A Week" anthology. Exciting stuff - and great guitar playing!

That said, I don't like Stevie Winwoods vocal approach that much. Although clearly a great, great talent, I think his vocals often sound a little bit forced and over the top, as if he's acting or singing at the top of his range. Concerning his time with the Spencer Davis Group, it might have something to do with him being so young at the time, getting a little bit hysterical or putting on a performance, acting "like a real man".

the comparisons were usually with brother ray.....

i don't think i understand the statement about being the first rock band. it's pretty obvious they were the 17th rock band....

Steve's Voice ist still special, even more than 40 years later. You can hear it for example on the DVD/CD-Set that comes out next week /Steve and Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden 2008) or by clicking on his homepage

Don't think you can sing for more then 40 years over the top, it's just his voice...naturally as it comes........

The Second Album was a favourite of mine for years on vinyl , so much so that I still have 2 very worn copies of it.
Fortunately I have a cd replacement now , Eight Gigs A Week.
On another relevant point , did anyone catch Clapton and Winwood on BBC4 last week, an hour long MSG concert edit .

Yep - thought it was excellent.

Claptons soloing still amazes and was suprised at just how competent Winwood is on guitar. I had know idea he can play so well. I guess the Spenccer Davis singles are not too much of a showcase.

According to Zentgraf, there is this video; I never found it.

10th February 1968: German TV (NDR) 'The Spencer Davis Group', incl.
- cameo of MJ in the streets of London (ca. mid-1967)

They were maybe the first trumpet-band, and that ain't what we call rock'n'roll...
