A few losers, but mostly brilliance.

My favorites are Rubber Soul (all that acoustic stuff) and Revolver.

I was wondering if anyone would mention Rubber Soul. I agree with Elmo.
i can't listen to the stereo mix of rubber soul , too much seperation between the vocals and music i always made a mono foldown on cassette *later cd* for my listening pleasure until i was finally able to aqquire the true mono version of the album.

Somehow, I prefer the Beatles' earlier stuff on which they do play together as a band. The Peppers/Mystery Tour/White album era is probably my least favourite of theirs.
You could say to me "he's a late borner, what does he know?". Well, you'd be right somehow, but from today's perspective, an album like "A Hard Days Night" can be seen as the blueprint to the Britpop movement of the 90s, and therefore is timeless.
The White Album and Peppers with their tape loops and mellotrons, on the other hand, have the sound of a certain era.

Other info regarding the White Album:
Balance engineer Geoff Emerick left after recording the first 6 or 7 songs.
Emerick's replacement was Ken Scott (who later worked with Bowie etc...)
George Martin's assistant was Chris Thomas who produced (I used that word loosly here as the Beatles were producing themselves at this point) a good portion
of the record. MArtin himself was away on holiday for a month while recording was in progress.
McCartney used a Fender Jazz bass for many cuts.
Also, when Ken Scott took over, he used not only McCartney's amp tone, but used DI as well. Emerick rarely used DI on Paul's bass.
Those loud, deep tones on Yer Blues, Not Guilty and others is the Jazz Bass,
and on many tracks, they used the Fender VI-String bass.
IT's also the album that George MArtin was involved with the least.
A few tracks recordent at Trident Studios (Hey Jude, Savoy Truffle, Martha My Dear, Honey Pie, Dear Prudence).
No Ringo on drums for Back IN The USSR, Dear Prudence, and Martha My Dear.
First use of eight track recording on a Beatles record: 19 on 4-track only,
4 songs a combination of eight and four track, and 10 on 8 track.
Guitars: Harrison used his Strat, SG, J-60E, J-200, Les Paul, and possibly his Casino. Lennon his Casino, J-160E, and Martin D-28. McCartney used a Fender Jazz bass, his Rick bass, Casino, Epiphone Texan, Martin D-28, and maybe a Fender Esquire. I don't hear any Hofner bass on any White Album songs.
Amps included Fender Bassman, Fender Showman, Vox Conqueror, AC30,
Fender Deluxe, and Vox 730 bass amp. These are from photos of the recording sessions which there are very few for some strange reason.
BTW, the Trident studios piano heard on Hey Jude and Honey Pie is the same piano
used on Elton John's Your Song and Bowie's Changes.
Unfortunatly, Trident sold it many years later and I assume is still out there somewhere.

great post... is this info online anywhere in more detailed form?

listening closely this time, I thought the horns on "Mother Nature's Son" are a mellotron. Could this be?

i like the sound and the mood, but their strongest songs are on other albums.
minimum half of the songs are fillers.
reminds me of exile, but with exile i even dislike the sound.

really, half? I just listened to the album for the first time in probably 20 years, thanks to this thread, and I'll give you side 4, and "Wild Honey Pie," but that's about all I'd call filler. And there's filler on many 1-disc classic rock albums--"Country Honk," for ex. Most of the tracks here are given full productions. Granted, the Beatles had no motivation to be restrained at this point.

but I think side 3 alone has several of my favorite songs by them.

It's horns on Mother Nature's Son. However, the percussive sound on that song is Paul tapping on a hardbound book of The Song Of Hiawatha. One of the engineers remembered him reading it the night he recorded it.
The only Mellotron on the White Album is, I believe, on Bungalow Bill
(played by Chris Thomas) and some snippets of backwards Mellotron on Revolution 9.
The was a brief use of it during an early take of Glass Onion that ended up
on Anthology 3 (right after the Strawberry Fields line).
The Mellotron part was erased and strings added.

Its mostly the Beatles. Some people still think its 1964 and its a little teenybopper thing where you cant like both.

Besides I think it's okay discussing other things when nothing really happens around the Stones.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are two rivers who's currents swirled together throughout the sixties. They were going to start their own business...too bad Alan Klein sabotaged it... They are the yin and the yang of Rock in the 60's.

Half brilliant, half rubbish, like most late 60's Beatles albums.

I agree that discussing other bands, especially the Beatles who directly influenced the Stones, is very relevant and interesting and as Gazza said, it's such a childish thing to think you can't enjoy the music of BOTH bands. I have been listening to the Beatles 3 cd set, the Anthology, and I love hearing the " out takes" and discarded versions of the songs that eventually ended up on Sgt Pepper and the White Album, to name a few. When you hear 3 versions of Strawberry Fields, for example, in succession you admire the diligent work by not only the Beatles but by George Martin who refined the song until it was to their liking. Even their " junk" had some value!!

Looking at that list of songs,I'd say their are 2 maybe 3 songs that don't belong. That's not a lot of filler in my opinion and the songs that are good are very good. Again ,absolute masterpiece.

I WILL is one of the best little ballads of all time and it is just over 2 minutes! The beauty of the Beatles is their brilliant simplicity; it is not easy to knock off a unique song with new melody and lyrics and yet have it be as simple as a lullaby. The Beatles were genius' at creating these gems! BLACKBIRD, JULIA and CRY BABY CRY are all in this category.

Ringo sings this one, but I would imagine most people would presume its a Macca composition because it's so lush and syrupy. Lennon actually wrote it. Maybe he didnt think he could get away with it if he sang it himself. I always liked this one.

It's a masterpiece. How much power must John Lennon have had in the group and with the record company to get Revolution 9 included on it.

Macca and George Martin didn't want it on the album because they didn't consider it to be "Beatles music". But what IS Beatles music? I would say it's any music made by any Beatle(s) prior to the official breakup of the group. Revolution 9 is as much a Beatles song as I Want To Hold Your Hand. So is Cold Turkey, which John recorded when he was still a Beatle, and WANTED to have released as the A-side of a Beatles single.

And while I consider Cold Turkey, written in 1969 with THE INTENTION of having it released as a Beatles record to be a Beatles song, I DO NOT consider Free As A Bird, written in 1977 with NO INTENTION WHATSOEVER of having it released as a Beatles record to be a Beatles song.

Not sure how closely an Englishman like John would have been following the 1968 U.S. presidential election, or whether he would have been influenced by the events as they unfolded, but it IS interesting to note that John began compiling the sound effects and making the tape loops for Revolution 9 on June 6, 1968, a few hours after Robert F. Kennedy died of his gunshot wound.
