Didn't like it 40 years ago, and still don't like it now.

Love the White Album. It evolved after the others, with
fully realized sound, song gems. When it was recorded, many people
didn't realize how separated the Beatles had become, fwiw. Maybe
that was freeing in a way.

Others mentioned are not too shabby either, for example Abby Road, wow...
Hard to pick a favorite. The White Album has cuts that were not/are not
aired constantly, so they may seem fresher.

It's a brilliant mess of a record. It demonstrates the vibrant creativity of the band. Ideas are flying all over the map. How can a song like Wild Honey Pie be on the same record as the lovely I Will? But it is clear now that its members are going in different directions and it has that scattered feel. But no one can accuse that band of going through the motions. Only The Beatles could make some of those songs listenable or interesting. They remain master song makers, master vocalists and wonderful musicians.

Sgt. Pepper is a monster landmark record and it deserves it. There is a pulse that runs through that record. It's like a living being. It still draws me in like few records ever have. I do not put it on unless I intend to go from start to finish. It's a work to itself. How many records do you put in THAT catagory?

love it and it has apparently aged purty well - my 21-year-old daughter requested it last time she was over and i was delighted that she sang along to every tune....kinda warms the cockles...

I agree with much of what has already been said, and as a huge Beatles' fan, I thought that most of their work was pure magic. Gazza, I know that the White Album is a bit indulgent but don't you think that by leaving in the " fluff" you get the true flavor and sense of where the band was at in 1970?? It's like on EXILE, leaving in " Just Want To See His Face"....it's almost an out-take, and could easily have been left off the album but I'm glad it wasn't discarded! Isn't that why some folks are bootleg addicts? They like to hear the little banter and snippets that are never on traditional albums.

yeah..thats what I was getting at, Debra. The 'marginal' songs help make it gel as a complete work,

You could make a similar argument for Abbey Road. The songs on the 'medley' on side 2 weren't written or recorded together as a piece, but are 'half songs' which would have probably been left off ordinarily but somehow work brilliantly when pieced together (I'd argue that it's actually one of the 2 or 3 highpoints of their career)

I love all the FABS albums, for a long time my faves were Hard Days Night, Rubber Soul & Revolver. As for the White Album whilst I understand the thinking behind " "It would have made a better single album" I dont agree, its an album that slowly reveals its brilliance, every time I play it (and skip number 9 winking smiley ) i have a different favourite. I recently did a 4 CD Beatles compilation and the white album was the hardest one to leave tracks off, the individual tracks seem to say more about the (individual) Beatles than any other album, and yet is still clearly a "Beatles" album in a way none of the solo albums ever could be.

Many wise words about a nice album. I agree about that leaving a big amount of McCartney-fillers, it would have been a really great single album. Like on most of the Beatles-albums the Lennon-songs stands out (especially Dear Prudence and Happiness is a warm Gun).
Hard to pick a fave album when it comes to the Beatles. The most fantastic thing is that all their albums (plus all the singles, EPS) were produced in just seven years!

exactly, beetles = beginning of the "boy bans" (pop).

The Stones ROCK.

And the White Album = BEGGARS BANQUET

There is nothing 'pop' about the White Album.

i wouldn't go that far, but i would go as far as to say there's nothing more pop about the beatles than there is with the stones.

AH, the Beatles after 1968 were far from " pop". How can anyone call tunes like " Helter Skelter" or " Revolution 9" Pop? The Beatles will remain in a category all by themselves, and that takes nothing away from our beloved Stones. It's just a fact that they made everyone's jaws drop, EVERY TIME, EVERY ALBUM!

P.S. that means that the Beatles influenced our generation, the Stones are included here, and generations after ours. They continue to influence music....as do the Stones. If you're a monster in music, you will always be influential. If you achieve the kind of status that the Beatles and the Stones have achieved, I think that the influence is eternal.

A few losers, but mostly brilliance.

My favorites are Rubber Soul (all that acoustic stuff) and Revolver.

I was wondering if anyone would mention Rubber Soul. I agree with Elmo.

Don't care for it. Don't care for The Beatles. That said, I would say there are 5 or so good songs on The White Album - which is far more than any other Beatles album; so, it's probably their best. That said, there are 30 songs on the record, so even at their best, they're only batting around .166.

The White Album kicks ass. One man's fluff is another man's nugget. One of the greatest rock albums ever made.

Other info regarding the White Album:
Balance engineer Geoff Emerick left after recording the first 6 or 7 songs.
Emerick's replacement was Ken Scott (who later worked with Bowie etc...)
George Martin's assistant was Chris Thomas who produced (I used that word loosly here as the Beatles were producing themselves at this point) a good portion
of the record. MArtin himself was away on holiday for a month while recording was in progress.
McCartney used a Fender Jazz bass for many cuts.
Also, when Ken Scott took over, he used not only McCartney's amp tone, but used DI as well. Emerick rarely used DI on Paul's bass.
Those loud, deep tones on Yer Blues, Not Guilty and others is the Jazz Bass,
and on many tracks, they used the Fender VI-String bass.
IT's also the album that George MArtin was involved with the least.
A few tracks recordent at Trident Studios (Hey Jude, Savoy Truffle, Martha My Dear, Honey Pie, Dear Prudence).
No Ringo on drums for Back IN The USSR, Dear Prudence, and Martha My Dear.
First use of eight track recording on a Beatles record: 19 on 4-track only,
4 songs a combination of eight and four track, and 10 on 8 track.
Guitars: Harrison used his Strat, SG, J-60E, J-200, Les Paul, and possibly his Casino. Lennon his Casino, J-160E, and Martin D-28. McCartney used a Fender Jazz bass, his Rick bass, Casino, Epiphone Texan, Martin D-28, and maybe a Fender Esquire. I don't hear any Hofner bass on any White Album songs.
Amps included Fender Bassman, Fender Showman, Vox Conqueror, AC30,
Fender Deluxe, and Vox 730 bass amp. These are from photos of the recording sessions which there are very few for some strange reason.
BTW, the Trident studios piano heard on Hey Jude and Honey Pie is the same piano
used on Elton John's Your Song and Bowie's Changes.
Unfortunatly, Trident sold it many years later and I assume is still out there somewhere.
