Nice solo in this one. The Stones as a funk band. You got a problem with that, white boy? :

Darryl had no intention of being so, either. Look at Keith when Darryl cuts loose -- he loves it. Mr. Jones has been in the band since 1994, so get over it.

He's not a Rolling Stone-just a hired bass player(one of MANY capable of the job).
And he blows on 19th Nervous Breakdown. Geez, cant you take a joke??

That's fine. You didn't previously state that you were joking. Some of our fellow forumers have, shall I say, issues, so intent often gets lost in interpretation.

I guess when they replace Keith Richards or Charlie Watts with a competent studio musician who has played with x (chose your preferred jazz musician), people will say yeah he has no intention for being Keith Richards/Charlie Watts but that's alright, he is giving Stones a new dimension or something.

Call me conservative, but to me Bill Wyman is as crucial to the unique Rolling Stones sound and swing as Charlie Watts is. You cannot take the essentials out of the entity without the wholeness to suffer.

Bill was a necessary element in the Stones; still he hasnt been around
for the lion's share of two decades, so.. Darryl is okay,
but maybe he needs to go out with Keef some more.

The Stones cannot play funk, that's the problem.Darryl can.
What them brought together in another matter.

<The Stones cannot play funk,that's the problem>

Listen to Heartbreaker live from 1973 and Fingerprint File from 1975 + Hot Stuff from the same tour and say that again grinning smiley

thumbs up

In my mind, the "real" Stone was Wyman .

Darryl has a bass lign (how do you say :ligne de basse "???) more definied ,Bill 's one was much more fade /merge with Charlie 's drums.

I am a Frenchie ,as Mick affectionately called them in the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1977 .

The Taylor area was great but no funk.Learn your basics!

Listen to Miles Davis "You'r under arrest" with D.J:That's funk.

If you're not recognizing the funk in the instrumental bridge in Heartbreaker in 1973, you better get your ears examined smiling smiley 1975/76 was funky, AND Ronnie played.

And yes, I know my basics. LOL! Or, at least, I'm still learning when I play the shit every day. LOL! grinning smiley

That Bridge? That't no funk man, that's rock wih a wah wah pedal-a bit funky, but it's called Rock!

'75/'76?? confused smiley A party band IMHO.

You must be mistaking slap basses and keyboards for being funk alone.

On Heartbreaker the rhythm changes, the riffs are funky (Keith) AND the wah wah kicks in (Taylor). In other words, a transision FROM rock to funk, a very suitable thing to that track live, if you ask me.

Who would Charlie want?

darryl is a fine bass player - but he's proof you can't just remove an integral part of a band like wyman and replace with a competent player and not expect to lose something important in the process. they haven't sounded right since bill left...that's no slight on darryl. bill was every bit as important as charlie and keith, imo....

He sure made Sting sound great.
He and Omar Hakim were a phenom on stage that tour...

Jones IS a competent( nay, talented) bassman, but sometimes it just dont fit. And of course reading he used to play for Madonna was enough to sour me! I guess I just miss ole Bill. bassplayer617, sorry I wasnt really clear I was just yankin' yer chain. I guess sometimes my sense of humour is a bit dry!

By that logic, Rolling Stones have suffered officially since June the 8th,1969?winking smiley

My guess is that Jagger & Richards wanted a different bass sound when Bill left.
Don't you all think DJ couldn't copy Bills sound/style if he would??
No problem,I'am shure.

It was a reference to the first change in the line-up - how the Stones should have suffered when Brian Jones left officially in June 1969 - only they did not. I'm not arguing that the other Jones is better than Wyman - or that Taylor was better than Jones - they are just different. Like Wood was/is different to both Jones and Taylor ;-) Did that make any sense? >grinning smiley<
