This is from the 1996 reunion, with Glen Matlock on bass. They almost sound like a conventional rock band :

Traditionalist? Yes, as Matlock was their original bassist.

It seems they may have learned to play since their heyday, Stil, I loved them back in the day...

Oh, the Pistols could really play '76-'78.

'Never Mind the Bollocks...' is a masterpiece and a Berkely-level lesson in sound production (Chris Thomas and Bill Price), but listen to the boots from that era (with Glen Matlock)- they were monster players who knew just what sound they wanted and got it.

The '96 re-union live album, 'Filty Lucre', is actually sometimes less tight (for those who make a fetish of "tightness" in rock n' roll), but the band plays very strongly, even if Lydon/Rotten uses his Public Image voice (good on him- wake/shake people up).

It's a myth that they couldn't play. Only Sid wasn't any good with an instrument.

Yup. Definitely.

Sid kind of messed up the band, musically and otherwise.

"The multi-untalented Sid"- poor sod.(or poor odious creep).

wow, they suck! Those guys should have never come back . . . punk rock done by old guys, disgusting, is that a rolex on johnny, man real punk rock, another bunch of old guys cashing in, well we are used to it, we are into the stones . . .

i'll say it once and i'll say it again: Rock'n'roll is DEAD. Its last gasp was in the early 1990's, and this video is more punk rock than that crap above

Can't view your video clip, NorthShoreBlues, due to a dial-up connection.

But what is your definition of "punk rock"? Is it a musical style/form, or an attitude to how you present your music?

And- are the Stones, in some fashion, punk rock? (due to, at the least, their "@#$%& you" attitude towards-well, pretty much everything theses days).

I'm curious...

well i'm not sure, its like the supreme court stating what is pornography? you just know when it is . . . I don't think the sex pistols in 1996 is anything close to punk rock, do you?

I know I'm not giving you an explanation, perhaps its youthful abandon, yeah i'll go with youth! Rock'n'roll is a young man's game . . . Yes i think its a combination of style, attitude, and youth, i guess you just know when you see it.

Woaw I'm with NorthShore on that one... That's just pathetic - and I used to be very very much into the pistols. But there is a limit to how many ironical twists you can put on things before drawning into absolute rubbish. Their faces, these imbecile expressions they clearly pull without any feeling whatsoever. Pointless.

And what of piracy? (as in the Stones of today, saying "@#$%& you" to, not only hardcore fans, but pretty much anyone else who wishes they'd hang it up, whatever their motives for wishing that)?

And, too, why is it that elder-statesmen bluesmen- Muddy, Wolf, Willie Dixon, Bo, Chuck, etc.- are "allowed" to retain their youthful rebelliousness/libidinousness and not be advised to "hang it up" and shown general disrespect?

Rock n' roll (and this includes the Sex Pistols) involves a huge element of pissing people off, even those who have certain "expectations" from the form (and the best practitioners).

Pfffff.... I think there is nothing in common between the elder bluesmen singing with guts and gusto till their death and the ridiculous show of the pistols above. besides, who are they pissing off, Muppet? Do you see the queen going green? Do you see the establishment screaming? Or do you think I and NorthShore are like so pissed off we are about to throw the computer through the window? Naaa... Just a bit of Sunday trivia and an acknowledgment that this band is now plain crap.

I love it when people hold up Nirvana as a punk band. If my old, failing memory serves me, I kinda remember Kurt stating in interviews that Boston's "More Than A Feeling" was one of his favorite songs and served as a template for "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Don't believe me. Play both back to back. Song structure and production are similar. Now that's punk.

Agreed. Nirvana was no more of a punk band than Pearl Jam was (and is). Same goes for Soundgarden, who were much more akin to Led Zeppelin than the Sex Pistols or the Clash.
