has there ever been a thread asking for the best live versions of individual songs?

Just off the top of my head I would say

Gimme Shelter (Philadelphia 72)
Angie (Brussels 73)
Tumbling Dice (Brussels 73)
@#$%& (Newcastle 73)
Heartbreaker (London 73)
It's Only Rock 'N' Roll (L.A. 7/13/75)
Memory Motel (No Security version)
Miss You (Handsome Girls disc three version)
Let's Spend The Night Together (Still Life version - Hampton)
Neighbours (Hampton 81)

Others?

heresy. 72 rips 81 to shreds.

I would agree the 72 versions of YCAGWYW are among the best - I'm partial to the Welcome To New York version

Wasn't that version of LSTNT edited together from another show because the actual version from that show has the ending falling apart? The boot I have of that show has it falling apart. Yet alone that they O/D a third guitar to the bridge!

I still really love Honky Tonk from Love You Live and Monkey Man from Licks. As far as those songs go.

i was with you until I slammed on the breaks at Memory Motel...isn't that the one w. Dave Mathews as guest? Blah!!!

Gimme Shelter from Philly '72 gives me goose bumps - that Taylor solo is SWEEEEET!

I don't know which Philly show you are referencing there Greek, but I was
at the first show 9/25/81 and while it was the first time I saw the Stones and I was just 16 thereby making it the highlight of my life to that point, I don't recall ANYTHING being played that was musically "best" or even "memorable".

That said, and I know others disagree---I have always loved the Love You Live version of YCAGWYW; Ronnie's solo smokes on that, whether its live or he punched it after, I don't know but it sounds like some pretty inspired playing to me.

Gimme Shelter, Philly '72 is amount as much as you're ever gonna hear a Les Paul sing.

I keep listening to Brussels 1973 and every song is just an incredible performance.

I love listening to Ya Ya's....still a favorite nearly 40 years after it was recorded...but I am not sure how much is really 'Live'.

Away from recordings and going to actual shows I have witnessed, I loved them opening with a NASTY version of Not Fade Away in Toronto CNE Stadium in 94. They made it truly their own. It was not 'cool Buddy Holly song'....it was not 'hey we're the Stones let's have a fun party of the 1981 tour'.....it was 'we're the Rolling @#$%& Stones, you'd better hide your women, we're nasty and here to take your town'.

1969 Oakland Bootleg version of Sympathy. The start of the lead break is pure evil, much different than the Ya-Ya's version, though I love that one too.

Midnight Rambler from Brussels. 1973

Hot Stuff from Les Abbatiors 76

Shattered from Memphis 78

Let it Rock...Leeds 71
Some Girls...Sheppard's Bush
Dance Little Sister and Route 66.....El Mocambo

I like the Neighbours Licks version over any other version. It's edited a bit but rocks like hell!
I prefer YCAGWYW from the '73 tour because of the beautiful sax solo so I'd say Brussels.
Midnight Rambler - Saitama
Gimme Shelter a tie between Philadelphia '72 and Paradiso '95 but there are so many awesome versions that you can't go wrong with that song.
IORR - I really dig the '97 St. Louis version. Great guitar work by Keith.
Miss You - Handsome girls disc 1 or Hampton
Let it rock - '78 without a doubt
Love in Vain - Difficult, '69/'72 is great but i really dig the '78 version on handsome girls disc 1. The best however is maybe the Stripped version same goes for Wild Horses.

Cheers,
Wuudy
