I don't usually choose my bands based on their political preferences, mostly because I don't usually know what those preferences are. But, if I did, in this day and age it might just affect my feelings on them because everything is so polarised. Irregardless, everytime I hear about an artist or band like ZZ Top being republican, I can't help but think WHAT THE F..U..C..K.. IS UP WITH THAT!?! The reason being, these guys have lived the rock n' roll lifestyle, from what I know of them, to the hilt, done their fair share of everything, etc. Which is all fine and well. But then you hear they're republicans, and I can't help but wonder why. Don't they know that if the republicans had their way, all that shit would be outlawed more than it already is, and their music heavily censored, among other things? Don't they remember, or even know, what the Nixon administration did to John Lennon, and to a lesser degree, what happened to the MC5 and god knows who else during Nixon's time in office? I don't get it, and I can't rectify leading an at least somewhat hedonistic lifestyle and being a republican, when such a lifestyle goes against everything republicans stand for, and, in the case of the christian conservatives, preach. It makes no sense, and, in my eyes, makes them hypocrites, does it not? Am I the only one here that sees this dichotomy, this conflict? And before some republican ass-wipe starts whining, I don't think that democrats are any better, I'm a registered independent because I'm so fed up with both parties, but I feel the democrats are less concerned with taking/and or keeping certain personal liberties from me. Why do you think they are called liberals to begin with? Because they are more lenient about people's private matters than conservatives.
