I still enjoy listening to the extended YCAGWYW solos from his first tour with the band in 1975.Personal favorite: LA Forum July 10. There's also a cool solo in "When the Whip Comes Down" from 1978. That one is on "Handsome Girls".

"Seven Days" live version from Bob Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, two great solos by Ronnie actually, weaving with Steve Cropper on the second one and a beautiful organ solo by Booker T. in the middle.

That's Ronnie at his best.

Favourite studio LP solos - what he did on Crazy Mama is very nice. His lead work on Shattered is excellent. Some of the albums after Some Girls it is hard to tell if it's Ronnie or Keith doing soloing - She's So Cold for example.

Live his solo on Start Me Up from the 89-90 tour is my favourite with Tumbling Dice - the 94 Miami PPV was really good - he's always played a great solo on that tune - coming in second. And his noodling on Beast Of Burden (LP) was fantastic as well. He had a pretty good on on Saint Of Me too.

Dunno if it strictly fits the definition of a solo, but in the Faces I really liked when he was sort of 'let loose' - especially a version from Fillmore West of Plynth that segues into Country Honk.

Within the Stones my faves are Wild Horses and Hand of Fate from 75/76 and Far Away Eyes from '78.

When Ronnie solos I cringe. He simply does not have the imagination or the fingers to be an effective (and certainly not great) soloist in my book. It is one of the great holes in the band's music. Many, many songs cry out for one. But the Shattered solo comes to mind. It is concise and effective.

Again, the YCAGWYW/LYL solo is IMO a travesty.

Been revisiting a lot of Neil Young lately. You do not have to be an virtuoso guitar player to play effective and emotive solos. NY has a great sense of drama and conveys intensity. Ronnie does/has none of that.

Ron usually doesn't have a " thick" tone when he plays solos. I wonder why. A thicker sound would bring some power to his imaginative solos.

is the HAND OF FATE solo played by ronnie?
if so, then this is his best one for me...

Wayne Perkins plays the lead on Hand Of Fate. By the way, can anyone recommend anything else featuring Wayne.

Bob Marley "Catch A Fire" features Wayne - I think that's where KR first heard him.

Always thought it was a perfect fit for that tune

For some reason once he joined the Stones his own confidence in his leads diminished. When he took a solo with the Faces, that was his stage, and he took his time, and built a real solo (Rather go Blind, Stand the Rain, Jealous Guy, Memphis, That's all you need). With he Stones it is more rushed, his sound has gotten thinner and thinner; when he DOES get a good sound, he does not have the time.

I know what u mean -- would u say almost kind of tinny a lot?

I hate to raise the T word, but did MT have more of a "thick" sound?

Yet, I have come to really appreciate Ronnie more of late and I think, maybe i am the only one, that he has some really good parts and leads in SAL, esp All Down the Line and so what if it is an MT song.

Dagger,

I didn't know that Wayne Perkins played lead on Hand of Fate. It makes you wonder about possibilities of him as a RS (not to mention WAY).

He could have been one of those guitarplayers that could have made the RS an interesting band to listen to after '75. eye rolling smiley

Love every note Ron plays in this version.

I agree.I love his playing then.Faces-era Ronnie actually had a very distinctive sound, you always know it's him. When taking a solo, whilst never very technical,he also had the knack of playing exactly the right note at the right time.He kind of lost that in the Stones, but he still had it here...
